How do I connect a switch to a PC and monitor when it has been tripped?

I presume it would need to be connected to one of the serial ports.

    but how?

Are there any good sites showing how to connect to external devices such as switches, relays, lights etc?

Take a look at http://www.lvr.com and its links. It deals with interfacing the parallel and serial port with hardware (links) and software (DLLs).

    Question Infared

Can anyone tell me where I can find VB code to interface an infared remote with my computer through an infared dogle connected to my serial port?
