FreeBSD or Linux..?

I have an extra computer that is currently not in use..and I want to use it as a webserver.. which OS should I get?

I found a store that sells FreeBSD with a lot of extra stuff...

they also sell linux...

If I should get linux.. which one?

mandrake, redhat, open, suse, corel???

Mandrake 7.2 is the best linux (in my opinion). I like it because it's all compiled for pentiums, so it's faster on my system.

The latest version of RedHat has been slated by Linus because the development tools produce RedHat-only programs :(

Although I think you'll find it easier to set up Linux than FreeBSD ;) I did!

Don't Let REDHAT Monopolize Linux..

We alrady have enough of Microsoft.

I see little difference between the attitude of REDHAT and
Microsoft. Microsoft though deserves their money because
of their Versatility.

I've heard FreeBSD is really good.... stable... runs *nix applications....

but one thing I found wierd, was on the box, it said the http://www.hotmail.com 's server OS was FreeBSD, which is odd, because Hotmail is run by MS, shouldn't they be running NT?

Not that hard, but it just requires quite a bit more prior knowledge - it doesn't "coddle" you much.

I tried to install mandrake a while ago, and it said it couldn't find the driver for the mouse.... but when I installed windows it worked fine.. :confused:

does anybody know why that happened?

Not my area of expertise but....just got an article over my desk this morning....the majority of new web based apps are using Linux with a MySQL database backend. If you check out these guys (http://www.nusphere.com) they would seem to only support Red Hat linux.

We now have one linux server and went with mandrake cos the red hat installation was problematic at best. MySQL seems to run with no problems on it. Haven't yet got samba or apache running, (though Phantomd reckons he will have it running this arbo).
