System Tray Timer

Is there any way to put text into the system tray? I know how to put icons in using the API, but text (if it is even possible) eludes me.

Basically I want to put another timer in the tray next to the clock. Right now I'm doing it with an icon that continuously changes its tool tip text, but real text would be way cooler.

Alternatively can you override the clock text without actually messing with the system time?
