ATTENTION ALL YOUNG PROGRAMMERS!!
I have started a Freeware/Shareware company for YOUNG PROGRAMMERS, and I'm looking for voluntary members. If you join and contribute to a project you will get a cut of the profit (if there is any). Anyone interested should E-Mail me AS SOON AS POSSIBLE or add to this thread:
ricmitch_uk@yahoo.com or visit te website below (yeah I know the stuff on there is crap, but I'm better now... honest ;) )
This is a great opertunity to help and learn from each other. (Cliché!).
You don't even have to be a great programmer, anyone with a basic knowledge of VB QBASIC or even BBC BASIC is welcome.
Thanks. - ricmitch_uk age 15

Define young, please. Do you mean those who are temporally
challenged, or those who have been doing it for a short
time?
Any particular reason you don't want old farts?
HarryW
Jan 2nd, 2001, 12:36 PM
Temporally challenged.... I like that :)
When I say young I mean someone who has an age of less than 19 years, no matter what their ability. The only reason I don't want old farts is because I want the company to have young people with fresh ideas who are prepared to work as a group who will get on well with each other. I also have no respect for my elders.
HarryW
Jan 2nd, 2001, 01:09 PM
Then they will likely have no respect for you. It seems strange that I am classified as an 'old fart' at age 19, but if that's what you think, then good luck getting on well with everyone
Sorry Harry. I don't mean to cause offence by this post... just meet some people who can join the company. If you don't like what I've said then complain... just not on this thread!!
"fresh ideas" hmmmmmmm.....maybe. Most likely tho, "re-

I never thought that at age 27 that I would be considered an old fart. Ricmitch is an infantile little cry baby. You show signs of your immaturity by using phrases like "...The only reason I don't want old farts is because I want the company to have young people with fresh ideas ..." and "...I also have no respect for my elders...."
Why would anyone want to work with you or for you? If age determines how fresh your ideas are, then I think that you are missing something.
Why don't you go play with your Play Station 2 and listen to some BackStreet Boys CD's or something. I'm sure that mommy and daddy got you that really cool poster of N'Sync for Christmas. Why don't you just butter your corn to that! (Age discrimination is a b!tch, isn't it?)
Well there goes another New Years Resolution to treat people nice. And it is only the third day of the year!

i think that we should give him some support, come on Kovans company http://www.alkitab.net is going strong (which i am a part of). but as for having fresh ideas from kids i think that you would be better off employing anyone from any age range, because the "older generation" have been here for longer nad understand things more,

Please do not call anyone older than 19 an old fart.... no I am not over 19, I am 14, but I have quite a few friends that are over 19.... one is 27 and he's a hell of a lot more fun, and smarter than any 14 year old I know.
Why don't you go play with your Play Station 2 and listen to some BackStreet Boys CD's or something. I'm sure that mommy and daddy got you that really cool poster of N'Sync for Christmas. Why don't you just butter your corn to that! (Age discrimination is a b!tch, isn't it?)

just like you assumed that all peoples over 19 are old farts....
and Jim, backstreet boys isn't really the "thing" anymore.... now it's rap :( horrible, horrible HORRIBLE... I hate that music..... I hate those "boy bands" too, but I would rather listen to them then rap...... god I hate rap......

You could never upset me, Katie. Just for the record, I think that the "younger" generation is in great hands because of level-headed programers that are on this web site. There are plenty of talented young programmers that visit this site often enough that one neophyte can not ruin the bunch. I just like to bust them because for some reason, no one will admit that they listen to the BackStreet Boys and N'Sync, yet their record sales are though the roof!
Have a peaceful new year everyone!

Riiight..... so you think that it is mature and professional to call anybody more than 4 years older than you an old fart? You think that it is not in the least bit disrespectful, or even insulting to insinuate that said elders' ideas are less 'fresh', and even that they would not be able to get along with the other members of the group?
Hardly a professional or mature outlook. More than that, it's pretty ridiculous, which is the very point which I wanted to make, in a jovial kind of way.
Essentially, he insulted the majority of the forum members, and a lot of them haven't taken too kindly to it. Merely a human reaction, not an immature one. Besides, he doesn't need you to defend him, he's got no respect for anything anybody says anyway.

for a bunch of *old farts* you are pretty immature. I guess i'm going to be considered an *old fart* in another 2 years but right now i'm probably more mature than half of you. I think you should keep your rude comments to yourself and not try to put down the young ones learning. I've been programing since i was 8 years old in like 7 different programming languages and I'm still learning. So let us young ones be...We appreciate all the support and help that you *old farts* offer to us for the ones in training and I hope you will continue with your generous time and help.
As to the original post of this message, I would gladly like to help you out with your business. Right now I have absolutely no reason to program but for fun. If i could make a little profit that would be great.

I didn't appreciate him calling others "old farts" just because they have maturity. It's a sign of that maturity that we don't like things like this!
BTW I'm only 17 and have been programming for 11 years...
KnIgHt
Jan 9th, 2001, 03:03 PM
those that are mature would ignore a small offence like calling elders *old farts*.
In point of fact, the first person to use term old fart was
myself....I turned 50 a few days ago.
My personal disgust stems from the calm assumption that the
only "new" ideas can come from someone under a specified
age. It has been my experience that someone that young
does not have new ideas, but rather rediscovers old ones.
It is true that the great advances in computing languages
and OS's have (generally speaking) come from younger
minds. But these younger minds were in their late 20's and
early 30's when this occurred. They also had an enormous
amount of theory under their belts, and not just about
programming.
The underlying premise of "fresh ideas" due to youth is
flawed.
KnIgHt
Jan 9th, 2001, 03:11 PM
that may be that we do rediscover old ideas....hell, i just finished writing a program to lock your system up untill a password is entered a few minutes ago.....it works perfectly....thats an old idea...its just redesigned in a way that I find it most effecient for use. Let him just have his fun....If he just wants the youth to be programming for him...let him be....this should be a concern only for him. If in your opinion you think that new ideas come from the more experienced and the wiser then you can stick with it....i'm not complaining....i just think you should let everyone decide for themselves what they want.
barrk
Jan 9th, 2001, 03:15 PM
I'm with you DerFarm. What bothered me most was the idea that no ideas of value could possible come from someone over 18.
KnIgHt
Jan 9th, 2001, 03:25 PM
he didn't say specifically that people over 18 or whatever didn't have new or fresh ideas......he just said that he wants younger people because of their new ideas....
in someway it is true that the younger people have new ideas.....why do you think that kids can amuse themselves for hours on end playing by themselves....they have excelent imaginations....the older you get.....the less creativity you have....i'm not saying that old people don't know how to make new stuff...i just mean that mind of a child is filled with millions of thoughts that can be brought out to the surface fast for new ideas.

HarryW
Jan 9th, 2001, 06:56 PM
What he said was ridiculous, and it is certainly not immature to point it out. Bloody hell, who gives a **** who's being 'mature' anyway? Why bother when you could just have fun instead? If I was 12 I would still think what he said was stupid, and I wasn't particularly mature then.
Well bollocks to it anyway. I'm gonna enjoy myself, and if you think I'm being immature then that's your problem, and you deserve it.

Is this thread dead?
I'm a real sucker for the underdog, and this guy seems like he is getting POUNDED! Its pretty painful to watch... er read.
Uh, wait a sec. I was JUST going to stick up for the guy, but then I reread his posts. Man, he was being rude! He may not have been the first to call people old fart (and only said it in response to DerFarm [Nice Temporally Challened thing by the way]) but he just got more and more aggressive after that.
It is understandable though. He just wanted to make a post to recrute like-minded individuals, and instead he gets flamed up the wazoo (fun word).
So do us all a favor please, and cut the (now absent from this post) guy some slack and let this post dive to depths of the board where it belongs.
By the way, I am 18, Programming for 3 years, a relativly nice guy, oh and ... PLEASE DON'T HATE ME!
That is all.
Zero
Jan 10th, 2001, 05:50 PM
I know why he wants people under 18. I've run up against people doing this before. Both mentally and legally people under 18 (minors) are easier to exploit, and it's easier to steal their ideas claiming they belong to "the company." I'd be careful if I were you...
~Zero the Inestimable
I don't want exploit people! All I want to do is start a group that programs in its spare time and produces freeware/shareware and everyone who works on it gets a cut of the profit depending on how much work they did. I'm not gonna get into any copyright rows with anyone!
I didn't come up with the phrase Old Fart. DerFarm did:
Define young, please. Do you mean those who are
temporally challenged, or those who have been doing it
for a short time?
Any particular reason you don't want old farts?
When I said it I was only quoting him. I just don't know how to do those quote things.

It's really better I don't say anything. Tomorrow it's the first day of school of the second period and I could eat a teacher alive. And today, in my last day of holidays, I run up with this ****ing thread, and...
silence is better...

I'm lots older than most of you young sprites and I have alot of fresh/new ideas........Trouble is, I usually forget most of 'em about 10 minutes or less after I think 'em up :(
Hey rickmitch.....seriously.......good luck on the new venture....I'm hereby granting you young fellows 1 year from today to crank out some real kick-ass software :)

Yeah, just gonna throw in my bit, The idea is not a bad one i grant you, but it was a bit ill worded don't you think? And the bit saying that you have no respect for your elders, why is that? I mean what's the problem with your elders?
And what i wanna know is how do you propose to make money from freeware

This one of the most misunderstood points on this thread, I didn't actually use the term old farts first, DerFarm did, when I used it I was just quoting him.

Define young, please. Do you mean those who are temporally
challenged, or those who have been doing it for a short
time?
Any particular reason you don't want old farts?

ummm, i misunderstood nothing. i know you didn't start with the old farts thing, i was just curious as to why you have no respect for your elders as quoted in your intial post...
it had nothing to do with the fact that some one said old farts and it got blown out of proportion.
So why don't you have respect for your elders? and why do you think that only young people have fresh ideas? or is it that you wanted to come across as a non-conformist and wanted to sound like a rebel, and go into 'extreme programming' and not have anyone looking over your shoulder helping you with mistakes that you are gonna make....

I needed to think of an excuse for why I didn't want older ppl, it was the first thing that came to mind. Hey I was young and stupid then. I just want to work with ppl I'll get on with better and who won't try and be all: "I'm right 'cos I've worked for friggin' Dell for 15 years!!"
Y'know.

hey i think the old farts have more to them than some people think. like they've gone through most of their lives and they know what they want and what to look for while us youngsters are still developing and educated opinion.
just my 2 cents worth
