Apart from eyecandy do these things do anything useful?
I've heard a lot of talk about them but from what I can tell all they do is add wobbly windows and 3D workspace selection. Has anyone here used either of them, is there anything to be gained from using them from a performance functionalith point of view?

If I had a nice fast computer I wouldn't waste its clock cycles making things wobble. Some effects can be handy though, like transparent terminal sessions (very handy if you need to watch a few windows at once, just stack them up).

One of the good points of Beryl is that is adds an Expose effect. There are other useful features like Window Grouper (http://wiki.beryl-project.org/wiki/Window_Grouper). The transparent terminals are handy, as Woss mentioned. You're able to hover over the task bar and get previews of the windows, even if they're minimized. It's definitely worth checking out.

Transparency for the terminal window I could use and the grouping of windows would be handy especially for programs like the Gimp or Glade, that have multiple independent windows (really annoys me).
I think both Compiz and Beryl are planning on merging back together again, it might be worth checking out once they do that.

I use beryl, although with the wobbly windows turned off (I hate em!)
Pressing ALT+TAB or SUPER+TAB will show live previews of the windows that you can switch to. Hovering over a minimized application in the tool bar will also give you a preview of that window. These are pretty much the only useful features besides real transparency that I really enjoy.

I stuck on the PC last night and had a bit of fun with it. Ran into a major problem though, when running Blender its render window doesn't work properly. This would be a show stopper for me.
BTW was is the SUPER key?

The "Super" key is another name for the little "Windows Logo" key. ;)

"Super" key I'm surprised that don't call it the "Evil" key
