Bumping threads?

I really am going to sound like a noob, but what exactly is "bumping threads"?

For the most part we dont allow bumping. If you have extra relevant content to add then a secondary post is best.

(most bumps that are found are deleted by the mod staff ;))

Hmmm, I see I have been quilty of this practice! I didnt realize that this was a no-no.

Yes, like when you get more information to add from your own efforts at debugging/testing to get a solution to your answer.

Surely no one expects to create a thread and bump it to death hoping someone will write it all for you? :)

Is this a recent policy? I think I was encouraged to bump some thread by one of the moderators not earlier than 2 years ago. But I could be wrong, the grey cells of my brain are dying at an ever increasing rate.

It has always been "policy".

Bumping threads too soon is seen as rude by many people (as you are basically saying "hurry up and fix my problem for me, because I can't be bothered to look into it myself"), so they wont answer your question if you have bumped 'too quickly'.

On the other hand tho, we don't want people re-posting the same questions, so a bump after a reasonable time (at least 24 hours during the week, and more at the weekend) can be acceptable - but it is far better to try to solve the issues yourself, and post what you have done along with an updated question (as people know that they wont be doing all of your work for you).

In general, bump posts will be deleted by moderators - if this happens, you are bumping too soon!

Exactly what I thought, only meant to reassure myself about it. It does make (common) sense.
