First European perhaps?
St. Brendan, Erik the Red, Monty Python?
C'mon, Paul. I thought the question was a throw-away.

America was discovered in 1964 by the four explorers John, Paul, George and Ringo.

Yeah, right.
Given a time frame the person/group I'm thinking of becomes
completely identifiable. I put these things up so I can
learn something too. I didn't realize that Brendan's
voyage was AD487. Of course, I don't think I would accept
that much of the evidence, either...
Let's rephrase the question:
Who was the first European to SETTLE in North America?

Mick Jagger.

Action without change
The ultimate narcissism
TD, you're thinking of Onager. And you can't get on them,
because no one has yet domesticated them.

Well maybe Brendan is a bit dodgy but the Vikings almost certainly visited N America (Vinland) in the ninth/tenth Century.

I found an interesting read on the viking discovery, check out

Well, it appears that I was wrong in my first
supposition...by about 170 years.
I was thinking of Prince Madoc and the Welsh. They
supposedly landed in Mobile Bay around 1170
http://welshdragon.net/myths/madoc_usa.htm
however, it seems that Leif the Lucky and some of his not-
so-lucky compatriots made it to Newfoundland (or
thereabouts) around 1000.

Personally, having been to both Newfoundland and Mobile in
the winter, I think Madoc got the better of it.

Well you live and learn. I thought it was Eric the Red and I thought he was a bit earlier than 985 but I had only vaguely heard of Madoc and I certainly would not have thought of him.
Cheers all,
P.
