ping a computer on the network
hello all.
first of all let me introduce my case. i am an electrical engineer working on a project to control the electrecity of a network. one of the task that should be done is to "ping a pc " (i.e. simular to run : ping 192.168.0.122 -t ) to see if there is data transfer between those 2 points in the network.
need help "i.e in details" how should be done in vb6 to ping an ip and using which component or which function since i have no idea about this topic i will be glad to see a complete example

Re: ping a computer on the network
First off why are you trying to control the "electrcity" of your network? Do you realize that network switches are circuit based switching and there is much you can about it unless you redesign the switch. If you want to seriously study ping, first you need to understand that ping is a ICMP broadcast. Ping is based on http://www.ietf.org/rfc/rfc792.txt. You should probably read this. This will give you a detailed definition on ping which shouldn't be bad if you are an electrical engineer. You could probably write a ping from scratch giving your understand TCP/IP which you probably don't.
vb6 exmaple of ping. This example uses existig libraries which took all of 5 seconds to google.
http://vbnet.mvps.org/index.html?code/internet/ping.htm
If you want someone walk you through actually making a library to send raw packets and send a ping I doubt anybody is going to walk you through that. You are more likely to find an example in c/c++ than vb6 for that.

Re: ping a computer on the network
Search the Classic VB forum for ICMP AND PING. (Pull down the "Search" on the top bar of this page and click on Advanced Search.)
The most difficult part of developing a program is understanding the problem.
The second most difficult part is deciding how you're going to solve the problem.
Actually writing the program (translating your solution into some computer language) is the easiest part.
Please indent your code and use tags around it to make it easier to read.
