Tables and lines in word 2003 vs 2002

I have a table with some rows/cells. I have a macro that draws some lines on the table, which works fine in Word 2003. However, when I try it in 2002, the lines seems to "occupy" space, changing the table/cell sizes and so on. I dont want to touch the table, just draw some lines on top of it. Can't it be done in 2002?

I know there is some setting that makes the lines appear "in front" of everything else, and I try to set the Zorder 4 after drawing each line but it still looks pretty uggle.
