How to get your software "out there"?

I have decided to release some programs commercially as shareware. What are the best ways to get the software out to the public? What sites can one use to upload there files so others can view information and get user reviews?

There's download.com among a host of free-software sites (which also offer shareware).

Another good way is to make a website for it so that it is rather prominent on google search results. Having the download on a famous file-download site would add credibility for a relatively new product.
