USB not working

Im fixing this packard bell 2100 for some people and well at first the monitor wasnt working but i figured out it was dust. But now the USB wont work. It worked fine b4. So i desided i would reinstall windows ME but still it didnt notice it. Dont ask me to check the bios cuz its to old to even boot from a cd. Any way the machine is a Pentium 166 Mhz W/ MMX tech and the USB ports are on the mother bord.

Ohh YEah When i hook my cellphone up to it it gets power and is charging and knows its hooked to a computer.

All this computer is gonna be used for is listening to music. I have windows 98 se i know its better but i lost the key code. any way ME leaves 98 in the dust on slow machiens. And windows Me doent need any drivers for it. it has the driver for a basic flash device and even my cellphone (motorola L7) i dont know how but it does unless its on the phone. plus with greater multimedia support. thats basicly all its used for.

first off windows me was one of the most undstable os's made by Microsoft
so i agree with al42
second my post made sense. what i was pointing out is that me being so old may not have the Removeable storage service like windows 2000 and windows xp does ( in the services panel of adminstrative tools) as i havent used ME in ages i dont know if it does

I seem to recall that flash drives come with drivers for 98 and ME, so ME doesn't have internal drivers for them, but it has internal drivers for the USB ports, so the phone should be recognized as, at least, a not recognized device. If a clean OS install doesn't even recognize that something is plugged into the port, I'd suspect a hardware problem. (Then, again, on my laptop, I have to tell the computer to look for devices when I plug my flash drive in or it won't find it.)

Some flash drives (especially the most recent) use USB 2.0. I have never used ME myself (although it's reputation is well known amongst the IT community) but it may be that it/or the pc doesn't support USB 2.0 and as such wouldn't recognise the drive.

Also, I would have to agree with the others, the PC is just not up to scratch and if possible use 98, not ME, but if that is not possible a relatively cheap laptop (or desktop) can be purchased that will support XP

The Drive deffenatly worked b4 all USB 2.0 works on it. And another PC is not gonna happen. Plus they only care about the speed and windows 98 is slow even with a clean install running in safe mode.I know it maybe the worst OS but what ever its better then what u'all think. And 98 doesnt have any flash drivers.If i go any other way it will be a dual-boot of 95 and DOS-Windows 3.11 with calmira.

ME is a joke. Put 98 back on. Lack of your original serial code shouldn't stop you, there are more around.

well what are the specs of the computer if its slow with a win 98 install and did you look for my suggestion ?

Pentium 166Mhz MMx

32mb ram

5gb hd

trio or something 64 bit video adapter with 2mb eob or somthing memory

those are still in existance lol youd be better to get a new comp because that wont run much but if you want try 2000 and see if that's better

The best you will run on that is Windows 95. 2000 requires at least 128 MB.

minimum specs should never be used as that is just a marketing tool to appeal to more customers, and forcing them to upgrade when the software runs slowly.
To upgrade wouldn't be expensive

USB 2.0 is redundant... meaning that if a 2.0 device is plugged into a 1.0 port. it will simply operate at a slower speed.


sounds like there are no device drivers for the actual usb ports themselves.

the minimum requirements dont mean ****. my grandmas computer is a pentium 100mhz 32mb ram and still runs good. And ME still works good on a pentium 60mhz with 16 mb of ram. But Windows 2000 runs slow on Pentium 4's so ill just stick with ME

Even if there are no devices attached to the usb port ,you can see the ports listed under computername>universal serial bus controllers>.... Do you see the entries there,If not then there's a problem with the motherboard .

where have you been? my sisters p3 runs windows 2000 fine , and my p4 ran it fine as well it all depends on whats on the computer and its set up such as ram etc and should not be judged for every computer. as spyware , viruses etc are also a big factor of preformance

You only need those if you want the USB ports to work.
