My kids are getting old enough where I'm concerned with AIM conversations. Does anyone know of a quick and dirty way I can write a chat logger in VB6? Or could someone point me to a tutorial to get me started? It would make a decent programming project as well as save me a few bucks in buying a key logger.

You could secretly turn on the "Save chat" feature. I think that's what it's called anyways.

http://www.pscode.com/ prehaps?

If I ever found out my parents put a key logger on my computer, they would have one less functioning computer (and it wouldn't be mine) ;).

But really, why would you want to monitor your kids IMs? Why don't you just go the whole 9 yeards and watch what websites they goto? What data they transfer over the internet? Why don't you tap your own phone while your at it? Hell! Why not just 'bug' your kid?

Being worried about your kids IMs is like saying myspace is a horriable place for kids. Just doesn't make sense.

I mean...what are they going to talk about? Whos the hottest kid at school?

"Zomg did you look at the rear end on her in math 101!?"

If they find out your logging it, they will find a way around it. Every neighborhood has a hacker-wannabe-know-it-all-computer-programmer-kid who knows a thing or to about computers and will figure out how to get around your IM logger (or a keylogger if you write one). So, best advice is just don't waste your time.

Thats just my take on it...
Btw, check your PM on something intresting.

Check out http://www.biline.com/quickaim/

It's a little app I wrote a long time ago that would check for all your AIM conversations, and allow you to see them remotely.

Thing is, I haven't used/updated it since 8/12/03 .. so I have no idea if it even works anymore.

EDIT: Crazy as hell, it still works.

There are....but the ratio isn't anything to worry about.
I said in a PM to widstje, that just as long as kids use commone sense, meet the stranger in a public place, and bring their friends to...they are fine. Like say...a lunch date at burger king or mcdonalds, if they don't want to meet in public. Then you can probably guess their real identity ;).

Not really, the criminal can watch them arrive at the public place then follow them home and attack them when they arent in a public place. Never, ever, go and meet anyone you dont know ... to the kids at least .. adults you take your own risks :bigyello:

Is this turning into a moral debate? :P Anyway, an im logger might work by monitoring all data moving through the port msn uses, or xfire or whatever. I think portforward lists the common ports. However, this is not quick and easy. You need to write a fair bit of tcp code etc, and it could take a while.

If you're that worried about it, then buy a professional program, or, just sit your kids down, warn them about the various dangers of talking to people on the internet, then hope to god that your kids have enough intelligence not to tell people they don't know, where they live. To be honest, IM is fairly safe because you just add people you know. Chat rooms are much more dangerous.

P.S. I think k1ll3rdr4g0n may have a few personal problems to write a rant that long about monitoring your kids. Perhaps his dad works for the cia.

P.P.S And rory is right, curse the people who use crap templates! Curse them!

Rofl, my dad doesn't work for the cia. That would be cool though ;).
Really, I'm just pro anonymoity. I am also pro free speech and such. PM me for a site if you want to see how really pro free speech I am (a site I made, that if I were to post, I would probably get banned from vbforums ;)).

The internet is full of weirdos. One should never let children roam the internet un-monitored. though i suspect it would be moral to discuss the topic with your children. Inform them you are monitoring and care.

If I found out my parents key logged my AIM, I would play a joke on them.

Something to do with a donkey, a syringe of heroin and a transvestite hooker.

Dial-up is pretty much free (just look at AOL 39284029384092384 discs out there of 234980234809234 min free on AOL...) (run out of min on 1 account...just make another one ;)).
And I will be paying for DSL as soon I can get it.

#1. i serously think keyloggers suck, someone hacks ur comp and then they dont even have to put a keylogger on it, they just tap right into urs already installed, takes away half the time.

#2. i would be pissed if my rents logged my aim

#3. there is always someone who can bypass it, heck ive had about 100 peopel come up to me and ask for hacks removed. As being in middle school with about 500 ppl im the best on the comp and everyone asks me how to bypass loggers their parents have put on, trust me ther is always someone out there.

I recommended a sniffer:

free ones:
http://sourceforge.net/search/?type_of_search=soft&words=aim+sniffer

pay ones:
http://www.effetech.com/aim-sniffer/index.htm

Another option is block the traffic at the router level even websites.

Most newer routers have features that you can block websites and other traffic at set intervals of time. Just setup the times when you are home and walk in your kids while they are surfing. You can also log all the websites they goto through your router. Audit the logs ever night and block the websites you don't like.
