how to configure com port to laptop

i have purchaesd new compaq pressario notebook pc can some one tell me how i can configure com port to laptop?

i wants to get data from serial device and wants process it with vb6 mscomm control.

please help me

If the laptop has a serial port, just point the MSComm control to it.

If it has no serial port, you have 2 choices:

a) Buy a PCMCIA serial port and use that.

b) Buy a USB->serial adapter and use that (it'll install itself as a serial port).
