Get Usernames of people Online

I have a discussion board not unlike this one. I really want to figure out how to show the Usernames of the people that are on the board at any given time....just like this one does.

The board I have is written in asp. I have configured the global.asa file to read & show the number of users on the page at any given time...but would like to take it a step further and show the actual usernames...

Any suggestions? I have been messing with cookies and whatnot for a while now and cannot get it to show more than 1 user at a time online. I login in IE and it shows my username as "logged on"...I do the same thing in Netscape with the same results...but neither recognizes that there is someone else online at the same time. The "Users Online" counter does work though.

I suspect that VB World the cookies and adds them to a database table and the contents then displayed.

Thank you very much Mark. I am sorry I could not make out exactly what your posting meant. Would you mind explaining? I have got it to where it is reading a cookie...the page goes to a confirmation page when the user presses the "Login" button...and there is the user as "Logged On"...then using a 2 second meta-refresh the page automatically goes back into the forum...that is where the username is being lost.

Any help would be mega appreciated.
