VB in EXCEL

I'm a begining excel programmer with QB experience...having trouble trying to read hex and binary from a com port.......I found the old open com1:blah blah blah doesn't work anymore with visual basic and in the included VB with EXCEL 2000 there is no support for this MSCOMM32 that I have read about in this forum.....any suggestions from the pros?
