Michael

I'm not a great fan of Sylvester Stallone but one film of his that I do like is "Demolition Man". There is one scene in it where he is doing some needlework (!!! If you haven't seen it - don't ask!!!) and he says something like "So now I'm Betsy f***ing Ross".
Can any of our American friends tell me who Betsy Ross is? Does she have an embroidery TV show or something?
The wife of Mr Ross. Hope that helps you out.

She was a seamstress (or something) who knocked up the first rebel flag for those revolting Yanks (at least they were in 1776:D)
N.B. to all my US chums - that's a joke.
Cheers,
Paul.

She was credited for making the first stars and stripes American flag.....not the rebel flag!

From an English point of view, that IS the rebel flag. The Stars and Bars is just internal politics.
Joking, really.
Yours internationally,
Paul.

Can somebody please tell me what 'lol' means? I'm too old for all this...
Paul.
P.S. Oops - I've just seen you're in the military - I'll be more polite from now on Ma'am.
barrk
Nov 7th, 2000, 10:51 AM
It stands for lot's of love...or just kidding...or it's okay if you are not polite. (lol)

I can't say lol, my wife wouldn't approve!
Home to my four under fours now (two of eight weeks)<yawn>

Have fun with them. I have a 14, 16 and 18 year old myself. I think you've got it easier for the time being!

Yikes, four under fours, you're keen aren't you Paul? :rolleyes:
I hate to be pedantic, but technically 'lol' stands for 'laughs out loud'.

Boy, do I feel like a stupid! I like my definition better but, I won't fly in the face of superior knowlege!

'Fraid so Barrk :rolleyes: And I'm pretty reliable on this, I played Ultima Online (it's an online role playing game) just about every day for two years, and people are constantly saying 'lol', 'rofl', 'lmao' and other such abbreviations. There are quite a lot, see if you can recognise them/figure them out:
rofl
lmao
cya
brt
omw
omg
brb
afk
That's all the ones I can remember off the top of my head.
barrk
Nov 7th, 2000, 12:16 PM
rofl
definition: rolls on floor laughing?
usage: barrk thought lol meant lot's of love (rofl)
cya
definition: cover your ass(arse?)
usage: If you're going to claim to know something you'd better cya.
omg
definition: oh my god
usage: omg, barrk is such an idiot(rofl)

LOL doesn't mean "Lot's of Love...." It means "Laughing Out Loud."
Harry, here are some of the translations to your list:
cya = See Ya
brb = Be Right Back
One I use is CUL8R, which means See You Later.
Hope that helps....

personally IMEUAIGA
HarryW
Nov 7th, 2000, 12:32 PM
Well not bad so far :) Yep, 'cya' means 'see ya'. 'CUL8R' is an example of another popular family of abbrevs (note the irony :rolleyes: ) like 'w8 up', 'l8r' and 'm8'.
I should mention that some of the aforementioned abbreviations are sort of specific to online gaming, but could be applied to a normal conversation I guess. As a an example and a clue for the others, 'brt' means 'be right there'.

Oh and yes, 'omg' = 'oh my God'
rofl = rolling on floor laughing
lmao = laughing my ass off
cya = see ya
brt = be right there
omw = on my way
omg = oh my god
brb = be right back
afk = away from keyboard
ttyl = talk to ya later
ttfn = tata for now
OIC = Oh, I see
AFAIK = as far as i know
HTH = hit the head
IMO = in my opinion
IMHO = in my humble opinion
*** = what the ****
NFW = no ****ing way
FTS = **** this ****
FUBAR = ****ed up beyond all recognition
SNAFU = Situation Normal -- All ****ed up

The term "knocked up" means pregnant here. What exactly does it mean to you????
HarryW
Nov 7th, 2000, 04:09 PM
I thought HTH meant 'hope that helped'. Maybe there's 2 meanings.
Yeah knocked up means pregnant over on these shores too.
Haha, gotta laugh at Jethro's unfortunate bro-in-law *Chuckle* :rolleyes:

I guess we should be flattered that you think about us so often you've even made a past time of thinking up pet names for us....what an honor. Is this a nation-wide craze or just a local one?
HarryW
Nov 7th, 2000, 05:15 PM
Oh no, it's a world-wide craze :) I'm sure the Canadians have a whole bunch for ya if you ask; they have to live with you after all ;)

Boy, am I glad I asked about LOL - opened up whole new avenues.
I am looking forward to checking this thread tomorrow.
Harry - why aren't you doing your homework? That induction q is a bastard!
Cheers all and Good Night
Paul.
P.S. 'Knocked up' can also mean 'threw together in a somewhat haphazard manner' but you never know, Betsy Ross might have been 'up the duff' (pregnant)
The US and the UK - two countries separated by a common language. Still at least we can spell 'Colour'<grin>
Later,
P.
Americans, (have always wondered if Canadians Mexicans etc get slightly pissed at yanks being lumped in as Americans), are as well respected as our Politicians down here.....hehehehehehehehehehe
Actually l have nothing against Americans as a group, it just some of the weird and wild stories that come out of that country.
Ronald Regan as President <- tell me this was a joke.

I can't believe half the **** that goes on here. I can only imagine what the rest of the world must think. At least we provide some entertainment and keep things interesting I guess.
It looks like you guys have just elected a President who thinks Nigeria is a continent......lol......Ronald Regan the next generation.
