Ok, its time for today’s rant. The topic for today, is as you may have guessed, bloody 56k modems and big downloads.

Now while I am sure you will all agree that the PC is the ultimate gaming machine, pissing over any console you would care to mention, I am getting damn sick of having to download huge patches and mods for games.

I don’t know, maybe it is just me that is stuck in the dark ages of internet computing, f@cking 56k modem and all that. And if you are thinking about mentioning xDSL, don’t bother. Neither where I live in Bristol, or back home near London, offers DSL yet.

And to be perfectly frank, I am getting more than a little pissed off with having to download files. Sure I don’t have to download them, but often the mods that I download are better than the original game. Now that really is a sad state of affairs.

To make matters worse, I just installed the latest version of that damn waste of time Gozilla. The last version seemed to so the job quite well actually, but this latest release, 3.9, is a big pile of BS. It seems to work quite well at times, but then all of a sudden, out of the f@cking blue, it just seems to go idle. For a minute or two, it just does not seem to receive any data.

Anyway, I’m going to sign off before I get in trouble for slander. But rest assured, Gozilla is going to be annihilated from my system as soon as the current 50mb download is complete. A couple of weeks at this rate.

Rant over.

Yeah...I hate having such a crappy modem. I especially hate it when I am downloading a large file(15 meg, or so) and then just when the file is almost done, my connection is GONE. I HATE that!!!!!!!!!!

But I am getting DSL soon. My dad is going to call the company tommorrow. It is going to be awsome :D!!!!

I know what you mean Iain, I downloaded the DirectX 7 SDK (about 120 or 130 meg) on my 56k connection a while ago, and it took 9 hours!

Thankfully though, I get my cable modem connection installed on Wednesday :D 512 kbps downstream, that's gonna be so much better. If only we could get 8Mbps ADSL here on these shores *Sighs and looks off into the distance*

Now correct me if I am wrong, but a ADSL line that gives 512kbs on a line with a 1mb capacity, and a contention ratio of 50:1 means that.

Best case scenario.
1 user = 512 kbps download

Worst case scenario.
50 users = 20.48 kbps download. Worse than a modem!

What makes it worse is that exchanges has a contention ratio as well, for the ISP's. Apparently usually 3. So this means that theoretically 150 users can be competing for that 1mbps line.

150 users = 6.8kbps download. Oh my god, that’s far worse than any modem!

Yea, I tried using Go!Zilla 3.9 Man.. what a JOKE. I hate that crappy thing. BUT, I went back to my 3.5 Full version and it's GREAT.. I love 3.5 So, I am sticking with it. It's good for my 56K modem since I get booted every 3 hours. It's that dang FREE ISP. Boots you every 3 hours. .err.. anywas.. Go!Zilla has saved my bacn because of that...

The best download utility I have found is netants (www.netants.com). Also, I must have an incredibly good phone line. Dennis Wrenn takes 15 Mins to download 1 Mb on a 56K modem, and I take 14 Mins to download 1Mb on a 28K modem (don't laugh, the 56K is fried!)!
