    Unhappy laptop not working :(

it started last night, my laptop restarted for no reason while i was working on it (on a vb program actually) i logged on once it had loaded back up and after about a min it did it again then while it was starting up it did it again so i unplugged it and then plugged it back in.

i turned it on it showed the usual, white writing coming down and then it said blah blah blah windows was not shut down properly blah whatever and it had all those options like safemode and most recent settings that worked blah and stuff so i selected start windows normally and it came up with the usual windows starting bit, you know where it says windows xp in big font and theres the windows logo and underneath that is a little bar that has colours going across then it went black which it usually does for about 2 seconds before the logon screen comes up but this time it stayed black and did nothing for ages.

i turned it off then decided to start it up in safe mode, i selected safe mode from the menu thingy and pressed enter and it came up with all that white writing like it usually does when you start it in safe mode (i think its files that it is loading) and then it stopped on this particular file and didnt do anything, i left it for about 7 mins to see if it would load but it didn't (i didn't leave it any longer for fear of overheating) so i started it up normally and it done the black screen thing after the windows loading and i left it doing that for 7 mins, nothing.

the file that it got stuck on during safe mode start up is:

    multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\windows\system32\drivers\atisgkaf.sys

my operating system is windows xp

can anyone tell me a way to get it working please?

I am assuming you have a shuttle pc and are running XP SP2, in which case it seems to be a common problem. It appears that you need to disable L1/L2 cache in bios then boot in safe mode and uninstall SP2, then you can re-enable L1/L2 cache.

Do a google for "atisgkaf.sys" and you will see a ton of articles (if you have a shuttle pc).

If your laptop has a Shuttle Brand Motherboard then it seems to be a common problem with SP2. I would check your BIOS version if you do have a Shuttle Motherboard and see if a newer version is available from shuttle:

Or check with Time tech support and see if they have a fix

Then I would try to simply boot from the XP CD and perform a repair

You are probably going to have a very hard time repairing what is wrong, no matter what the cause is, without the CD
