Yankees vs. Mets

I know from reading other threads that there aren't many baseball fans out there. That's fine. I am. In 1998, I went to 11 Yankee home games including the 1st game of the World Series. In 1999, I went to 8 Yankee home games. This year I only went to 2 regular season games, but I managed to go to the second game of the ALCS when the Yankees beat the Mariners (last Wednesday 10/11/00).

My point to all this mindless writing? For the next few days any and all baseball fans around the greater New York Area will be in heaven. We will not think about the crisis in the Middle East. There is no Middle East. There is only baseball. We will not think of how some days our jobs are unfulfilling and somewhat shallow. There is only baseball.

I know that some people think that Americans are completly self-absorbed, and frankly I don't give a fat-frogs ass what people think about me. It is a joke in America that New Yorkers (I'm from Jersey so I qualify), are the most arogant people in the U.S. and that this series is not good for "baseball". The rest of the nation is not interested in a "Subway Series". And I can understand that.

Hope everyone enjoys the series, I know that I will.

Ok, here is something that will make you non-sport fans sick. The prices of World Series tickets (for games 1 & 2) at Yankee Stadium:

Bleacher seats in left or right field (can't see anything unless you are Superman)
Normal $10 today $750

Mediocore lower level seats
Normal $50 today $3500

These aren't even the scalped prices! These are the prices going through a broker (eg: TicketMaster). I can't believe that people have the money to spend on these tickets! It's sick!

I think that the name "World Series" is representative of exactly what's going on. There are ballplayers in the Majors are representing just about every culture and civilized country in the world. (My definition of civilized is country that has baseball). Right now in baseball, a great percentage of ballplayers don't speak English. I think that is awesome. There is no other team sport (except soccer, and nobody likes that sport anyway) that is truly global like baseball. One of my favorite ballplayers, Orlando Hernandez, escaped the crappy ass-backwards country of Cuba to play ball in America. It is estimated that it would take him 8,400 years to earn the money he was making in Cuba compared to playing ball in the U.S.. Japanese ballplayers are doing pretty well too. Perhaps baseball can't solve the world's problems, but who knows, maybe it can.

By that token we could have our own World Cup (that's football of course) right here in England, since most of the players that play for our teams are foreign anyway ;) Just look at Chelsea, I think I remember that they fielded the first totally non-English side for the first time a while ago.

barrk: I do hope that you are not trying to give me a geography lesson!!! I am quite aware that Canada is just to the south of Bulgaria!!! (I can't find an icon for tongue in cheek).

HarryW: I remember Chelsea's 100% non-English team - I think it was about 12 or 18 months ago. I don't think it will be too long before we have some rule limiting a team to fielding say 5 foreign players. I know the Italians introduced a maximum of 3 a few years ago. This maximum has to come soon or else the national team will suffer even more than it is suffereing at the moment. BTW in my opinion the new manager, whoever he is, HAS to be English. I would like to see El Tel but with his shady non-football-related past he won't get it. I think Hodgson will get it.

JPRoy392: It is obvious that baseball is very important to you and an lot of our US friends, but we in England cannot take seriously a game that is a bastardisation of a game that is played mainly as a social activity for young girls - Rounders. You may not understand this but other British readers will. BTW, I do not acknowledge the name "soccer". It is football - always has been, always will be. Rugby players/fans will probably argue with this as well as American Football fans but let em argue!!!

American 'Football' has sweet FA to do with your feet though, except for punts and field goals. And running I suppose ;) By the way, I like American Football.

Mike: I agree totally that the new England manager should be English, I think any other way is stupid. It's a national side. We don't field foreign players, we shouldn't have a foreign manager either. It just seems ridiculous any other way.

Didn't Terry Venables (or some other English manager) go and manage Australia? I remember watching some advert with him in, trying to teach them how to play ;)

Yes - Venables was boss of the Aussies for a while - from what I gather he did a decent job with some rough raw material - Apologies to any Aussies out there but with the exception of Kewell and Viduka - they should stick to what they are best at - Rugby. (I don't include cricket - thats a crappy game whatever your nationality!!!)

I also enjoy American Football as a game but the one single problem with that game is that the game's authorities have permitted the TV companies to dictate the pace at which the game is played. There is an advert between virtually every play - and then it degenerates into farce.

I remember that when the Football (not soccer!!!) World Cup was held there in 1994 the TV companies tried to introduce "timeouts" so that the TV-viewing public wouldn't go short of adverts for a whole 45 minutes. Credit (for once!!!) to FIFA for putting these totally money-motivated TV execs in their place.

The game is played as 2 halves of 45 minutes and if the TV companies want to televise it then great - but when the morons want to play with the Laws of the Game then they can shove it!!!

Has anyone heard anything about the XFL that is supposed to be starting in February? It stands for Extreme (I know it's an E not an X) Football League. It's American Football without the penalty/safety rules from what I hear. It will probably go as far as Arena Football did. Anyone remember that???

When your back line consists of players who only give assorted options of how to kick the ball away you are in real trouble.

With a bit of training, (and fitness) those forwards of yours might cause a few concerns to a second division side.

On the bright side, the All Blacks are gearing up to extract blood from the french, after that shambles called a world cup semi, that should make all pommies happy.
