    Range(A1, B1).NumberFormat = "Text"

The value is anything you see in the Category List with "Custom" replaced by "NumberFormat".

Try recording a macro in Excel to see see how to format a cell. There are many ways to go with this.

Try something like this:

Activesheet.Range("C6").Select
Selection.NumberFormat = "@"

To format a text field here's what I use:

txtField.Text = Format(txtField, "General")
