Ok, as you may well know i am a keen fan of the Delphi IDE. Lately i installed the Delphi 2005 Architect Trial on my computer and have been testing it, compared to my favourite IDE, Delphi 7. So here goes a basic analysis of my thoughts, incase anybody else was thinking of diving into the new Delphi :)
> First of all, is Delphi 2005 worth the money and hassle migrating too, when you could continue/purchase Delphi 7?The answer in my opinion is no. I am aware that i am not using the best PC in the world, but Delphi 2005 drains the life out of my PC. The reason why? When you first load Delphi 2005 it has to find out which packages to load, then does it (takes 7 minutes to load the IDE on my pc). Once you have managed to load the IDE, you are presented with nicely colored gradient filled panels, which by the way do look pretty. But wait, do we really need pretty gradients in a IDE? NO! Apart from it taking too much space, it takes more memory of course. For the price of going out now and buying a copy of Delphi 7 right now, is better then getting Delphi 2005.
> Does Delphi 2005 produce many bugs? I found many problems in the Delphi 2005 IDE, the componenets couldnt even be right clicked, ready for cut, copy, paste etc. When placing componenets on a form so if it appeared ontop of say a TMemo (if you were making notepad etc) when you ran the app, and came back to the IDE, the componenets dissapeared.
In conclusion i could rant on all day about the problems and whatnot, but overall Delphi 7 is like a rocket charged Development IDE compared to 2005. They even bloated Delphi 2005 with a C# Compiler, why? Maybe they were'nt getting enough sales from the product so they stuffed it in the Delphi 2005 setup for extra money.
In my opinion, Delphi 7 is the best Delphi product around to choose, its fast, takes little memory, has plenty of features, and a good solid IDE. Unlike Delphi 2005 which is packed with gradient filled panels and pretty mouseover toolbars
