hi, recently i made the misstake of putting a link to a compiled project in my sig and i was asked to remove it so i did. then when i removed it i was repeatidly asked to remove it but i allready had. i have been off of my computer for a few days because i bought a game and when i came back to vbforums earlier i found that all the links in my sig was deleted even though i allready got rid of the one that they asked me to delete. i was told that i should remove the link to the compiled project because some people put links to viruses and they deleted the links to my website and i am not allowed to put them back. i dont see why all my links was deleted but i was allowed to put one of the links back which is my one to my progress bar project (not compiled)

i just found out from a mod that they have made a new rule but decided to not tell any one. you are now not allowed any links to a site that is not owned by jupitermedia

you are now not allowed any links to a site that is not owned by jupitermedia

I've been traveling a bit lately -- I must have missed something....

It would be better to say that links to sites that compete with those operated by Jupitermedia are generally not allowed. I believe that makes sense to request. Just as McDonalds would prefer to not be posting on their counters the address of the local Burger Kings, I think it is fair to say that it isn't in Jupitermedia's best interest to post the address of their competitors.....

Having said that, if you have source code you want to link to, then there are a variety of places that are within Jupitermedia you can do that. This includes FreeVBCode, CodeGuru, here, and several other sites. If you need addresses to where you an post, feel free to ask here or drop me an email.

Brad!

have jupitermedia got a site like pscode?Yes we have: http://www.freevbcode.com
It has less repetetive content, and it tends to be higher quality code too.

can i have a short list of competitors that i can be sure not to add if it isnt to much trouble?A list of competitors would be huge (and incomplete), but you can find a list of JM sites on our at any of our "not found" pages, eg: www.vbforums.com/randomtext

If you are in doubt about a site being a competitor or not, feel free to ask any of the moderators.

I cannot connect to your site at the moment (connection refused), so I cannot say whether it is a competitor or not.

I do remember though when the issue of the link in your signature was raised, I clicked on the link and got a download prompt for an executable file. (edit: this was even after you changed the link)

You were asked to remove this link because of the security implications of people downloading/executing files which they aren't expecting. Your file may not have been anything bad, but we cannot allow one person to have a link like that and tell someone else that they can't have the same.

We don't want to restrict people any more than we need to, but we also want to keep this site as safe and secure as possible for all of our members.

Hmm!
This morning, his link worked when I was at home.
At work, after Si's post, it didn't work.
Now, back at home, after dandono's explanation of his server messed up earlier, well, now it works again.

Anyways, his site might be a competetor, but not a threat.
Nothing motivated me to go beyond his home page.

In what ways is my site a competitor?

I personally dont think your site is a competitor, and can't see where anybody has said it was.

The issue was the automatic download, even after you had apparently changed it. This happened with of few of us who checked, even those of us with no cache.

I don't know why this happened, but it was not acceptable for it to be left as it was - which is why we removed the link (after giving you reasonable time to fix the issue yourself).

I did change my link and it showed as changed on my sig aswell so i do not know what happened about that.

Let me state it again,

Here is my issue.... "Please rate my Progress Bar" is not linking to YOUR page, but rather to a page on a site that would be considered a competitor to Jupitermedia. As such, the link you have in your signature at the time I write this post is one I will not allow on this forum. I'll allow personal web sites -- that are not trying to compete with Jupitermedia content -- to be simply linked; however, we don't allow links to competitors.

Your link needs to be changed or *I* will remove it.

Brad

In a PM sent by hack at 06-23-2005, 05:03 PM :
Actually, they wanted that one gone as well, but I sorta talked them into letting you keep that one as PSC is not a personal web site (even though it is somewhat of a competitor), and the project linked is actually your own. Given that we were making you take the other one out, I got grudging approval to let you keep the PSC one.

I think this discussion should have ended after post #3...

Although I do not agree with the rule that you can not place links to certain pages (with none offensive content), those are the rules and we should just obey them.

Come on, is it really that big a deal?

Come on, is it really that big a deal?

Only when someone asks about it or turns it into one. Generally, if the links are subtle, they are generally not even noticed..... ;)
