Anyone have a war story they heard a old family member tell or a old person that you heard talk about there war story.

Here's one i was told a while ago.

I know this old man..he was in WW2..and he told me his story, here goes.

There were two brothers that landed on the american part of the normandy beaches on D-DAY, one of them was killed
and the other one survived..well the u.s. govt ****ed up
and sent two death letters home to the brothers mother...but when in fact it was only one brother that died...so the mother commited suicide. Pretty ****ed eh?

That's not nice :(

As a matter of fact I do have one. My great uncle Alf was in WW2 (English in case you hadn't guessed ;)) and one thing he used to do when he was in the trenches was sneak over at night and kidnap Germans for interrogation... but that's not the actual story.

One time he and his unit (or whatever) were sort of stranded and desperately needed to get a message to some friendlies - command-type people somewhere around the area - but they were under fire from a heavy machine gun emplacement. They had sent three runners with a message but they had all been killed. My Great Uncle Alf volunteered to try, and somehow managed to make it through, running through a couple of hundred yards of heavy machine gun fire. He delivered the message, in case you hadn't guessed that by now. I don't know any more than that, but I do know he was one of the few to receive the Victoria Cross for his bravery. Remarkable chap really.

I also had some distant cousins that were fighting with the marines on the island of okinawa, in WW2.

When they came back home, they just wasnt the same..not insane..just different, so i was told.

My mothers stepfather was also in WW2 Fighting the japanese
And my mom used to tell me what would happen when she was a little girl, how he would flip out and baracade himself and her and her brother and other sister behind a couch and he would have his rifle screaming orders too his "phantom troops" too attack , War is sad, real sad.

Oh well...... :(

It's only a song but it's lyrics are exactly how I feel

"War, what is it good for, absolutley nothing"

Alternative lyrics:

"WAR, never had so much fun!
WAR, never had so much fun!
Go for your weapon,
kill em with your gun.
Kill em right in their uniform
right in the Sun."

Okay, who recognises it? ;)

My grand father didnīt want to go to Spanish Civil War, so he took all of his teeth off. Authorities declared him apt, so he chopped all his right hand fingers. Still apt. So he took his right leg. Still apt. So he chopped off another part of his body. He escaped war, but now he was not able to be my grand father.

I don't know if this qualifies as a war story, but the VA tried to sue my mother for the GI Bill payments for my tuition at Ole Miss, because they claimed I was dead.

Sorry about my bad joke.
But you donīt have to go back to WWII or to civil war to find sad stories. Just read the papers.
In my neighborhood, a young man tried to rob a drugstore. The boy in charge of it (17 years old) resisted, and was shot to dead. His father, a police officer, alerted by neighbors, rushed in, and couldnīt withstand seeing his son dead, so he took his gun and killed himself right there.

I remember when i was about 16.. i was at my father's place of business and we were eating our lunch..then all of a sudden i heard 4 loud bangs coming from behind our place..so i went to the back fence too look what was going on (i thought it was fireworks)...then i saw this guy shot dead,.... i just remember his dead body lying there with a bullet hole in his head , one in his stomach, and his hand.
His eyes were rolled back into his head and you could barely see the black in his eyes. The flies were already landing on him and doing there business.

Then about 6 months later i heard from someone around the neighborhood where the guy was killed, that he used too wait outside a check cashing store and wait for old people too come walking out of the check cashing place and then rob them.I guess it is true..what goes around comes around.

.....:( you know it is sad..too actually see a dead person..you start wondering what were there last thoughts were...did they feel any pain..or did they just die.

Here it is 5 years later and i still remember that site as if it was yesterday, why i remember IT so ****ing clearly and not something else like a happy moment from my childhood is beyond me.

And that aint the first time i seen a dead person that close either.I can understand why some veterans of any war just start crying all of a sudden.

Well **** it whatever.

A Major who was a friend of my fathers used to cry and tell about his friend when he got drunk. He and a childhood friend went to West Point together. They had been buddies all their lives. The Major's friend had saved his life on at least one occasion. One day the Major was in charge of evacuating about 500 men from a position being subjected to intense artillery fire. His friend had been mortally wounded (gut wounds), but was conscious. The major ordered stretcher bearers to put an unconscious man with a minor scalp wound on a stretcher. His friend begged to be put on the stretcher instead. The major just turned away. He made the correct military decision by saving the man who would recover, but he could never forget that his friend died feeling betrayed.

The vaguely humorous story was told to me by man who was old when I was a boy. When he was a young man, he knew a man named Hank who was missing one leg at the knee. Hank told stories about losing the leg in some various heroic ways during the Civil War. The stories were all different. One day, the young man told Hank he knew he was lying, and wanted to know what really happened. Hank said that he did not think adults believed his stories, but wanted to amuse the young children who listened to him. He said the real story was that he was 13 and lived near a battle field. He saw cannon balls rolling along a road that passed by his house. He thought they were moving slowly and decided to stop one. He put his foot through a steel picket fence in front of a cannon ball. It might have been moving slowly, but it weighed a lot. His knee joint was demolished, and the doctors at the time could do nothing but amputate it.
