I've got an applet with 3 jeditorpanes. I want one at the bottom, one taking up the most of the center, and one to the left. I've got them set up in the contentpane using the standard borderlayout, but I'm still new to this and don't know how to give them definite shape. Right now, they seem to form around any text entered, how do I give each editor pane a definite dimension?

Call their setPreferredSize() methods.

You could use setBounds(int x, int y, int width, int height);

It's a hit or miss type deal, but you will eventually get the things the size and position you want them.
