Moved thread

I had started a Frequently Asked Questions for classic vb then I found out it has been moved to the codebank, I am making it with the intention of providing users/members that visit Classic VB an easy access to some Frequently Asked Questions and I guess some or most members doesn't go the Codebank too often hence they wouldnt be able to see that Frequently Asked Questions I started..... I was hoping it would have been made sticky in Classic Vb instead of being moved here in codebank as I myself who frequents VB Forums doesnt visit Codebank to often, I think I could count on my finger how many times I visited codebank since I joined VB Forum....

One more thing, if users/members could readily a Frequently Asked Questions thread then I supposed they will try to find if the problem they intend to ask is already tackled in that thread hence reducing the chances that members would ask the same questions that has been answered many times before from recurring....

Any comment would be highly appreciated.....

ClassiVB is a Q&A forum section, not a Tips 'N Tricks, so I agree with Pino that the post is far more suited to the CodeBank section.

I think that dee-u meant it should be there because the posters are more likley to read it if its in the same forum as they are going top post in... But then again maybe not...

We are looking at the idea of a FAQ forum if the plan goes ahead dee-u's article can be place within the faq.

I think the CodeBank should be renamed to CodeBank/Tutorials cause newbies will not know tutorials exist in there unless they enter the section and read the sticky. And what are the odds in that?

A good idea except that Tutorials are under UtilityBank.

If it goes ahead I would expect there to be links from FAQ's to appropriate tutorials, so their actual location would be irrelevant to new users anyway.

Once a user is looking at a tutorial they can click on the sub forum header (UtilityBank - Tutorials) to see more, without having to wade through hundreds of CodeBank snippets or multiple forums to find them.

I gotta say that I do not like the idea of a FAQ section.

When a new user asks a question - sometimes the question isn't even on target with the problem.

The personal touch of getting an experienced programmer to listen to a new user and pull the real issues out of that users problem would never be available in a static FAQ thread.

There is so much detail to issues.

Someone wants to know how to cut a string into pieces...

MID vs MID$ - imagine how powerful it could be for a new user to learn the difference between these two functions.

The old floating point inaccuracy - I've made a stance on this issue many, many times. I hope that every time I've made it someone has learned a bit from my passion in explaining the tiny details...

FAQ's can easily be misunderstood by a user who doesn't have the programming vocabulary - and I'm truly afraid of that loss.

Hundreds of hungry to learn people will never ask the question - they will get an FAQ answer that get's them around an issue and move along...

This is only my opinion...

I have lots of high school programmers come through my shop - when one comes to ask me a question, I always answer much more than the question they ask - sometimes stopping the whole office so that an impromptu whiteboard lesson can happen...

Book learning should be done from books - this is a live forum - the post and thread counts attest to that fact!

I understand your reservations, but the idea of the FAQ's isn't to eliminate those questions from being asked in the forums - it's just somewhere that people can go to get common answers more quickly if they want to.

If they don't understand an answer, or it isn't quite appropriate for them, they can post a question instead.


Hopefully people will post full FAQ answers, so that people understand issues like why the $ of Mid$ is important. The good thing about writing an FAQ answer is that you can spend a bit more time on it, so that you can make sure you get all the points across that you want to.

I do hope an immediate action would resolve this issue.... The original intention of starting that FAQ thread has been injured..... I think severely....

Hopefully we'll have it ready soon, I'll contact you when we've got something in place.

We're just working a few things out at the moment, to try to make it as useful as possible.

After far too many other things diverting my attention, it's almost ready to go live (at last!).

There needs to be a tiny bit more tidying up, and then Mod discussion about it before we actually publish it tho.

I'll let you (and the others involved) know once it is confirmed.
