How does one become a moderator here in vbforums?

mendhak

By asking one of the administrators, or more specifically, Brad Jones.

It helps if you've been here for a while so that you're 'well known'.

And to add to mendhaks point, obviously its best not to have had any run-ins with the mods/admins before and to have shown why you should be a mod :)

Jamie being the exception, of course. ;)

You also have to go through several training/timeshare seminars, and a urinalysis. After that its just a matter of the monthly dues.

We currently have 13 moderators so it's not likely that we'll need a new one in the near future unless someone resigns as Jamie did recently. Brad has given me the responsibility for choosing moderators so if you are interested you should PM me rather than Brad. I don't make the decision on my own however. I consult with the other moderators and we discuss the candidates before any decision is made. In choosing candidates we try to include people who have shown an interest but in order to be considered as a moderator a person needs to...

Have been around for a while
Have a good knowledge of the forum topic where the moderator is needed Have shown the ability to communicate clearly in both technical and non-technical discussions
Have a history of mature conduct on the forums

May I ask what are the benefits of becoming a moderator? Are they being paid?

crptcblade
May 24th, 2005, 08:30 PM
I never got paid :(, but you do get to make fun of people behind closed doors, the way it was meant to be.

:)

VBForums is a community forum. So anything you do is for the community, not for money. Nobody gets paid for this, because it's something you want to do, to help out.

Really? You don't get paid???
I got a sponsor. They pay me to insert their company ad every now and then in my posts because they like Connecting People ;)

Then waht are the benefits of becoming a moderator? Could you add it to your portfolio to boost your face-value?

MartinLiss
May 24th, 2005, 09:35 PM
It might help to be able to say "Moderator/Administrator at VBForums.com" but for me the only thing that it boosts is my ego :)

Well, it gives a personal satisfaction to maintain and keep organizes a public forum which connets thousands of people all across the world and allows expert opinion and knowlegde exchange.

dee-u
May 24th, 2005, 09:38 PM
But wouldnt it pressure you to post reliable threads and sort of?

baja_yu
May 24th, 2005, 09:45 PM
Why would you post anything else?

Just because you are a mod does not mean that you cant post a joke or two or chat in the Chit Chat forum.

dee-u
May 24th, 2005, 09:54 PM
If you are a mod then you should post quality answers to threads here right?

baja_yu
May 24th, 2005, 09:58 PM
Yes, but why shouldn't you do that even if you aren't a moderator?

baja_yu
May 24th, 2005, 10:00 PM
Nobody expects you to know the answer to every qustion, if that is what you mean. You dont have to have ultra high post count and maintain an average of XX posts per day.

Is there a minimum reputation to be considered as candidate? Or longevity?

It helps if you've been here for a while so that you're 'well known'.

I've just been here last feb this year, in your honest opinion have I not reached that stage as 'well-known'?

baja_yu

Well, that is up to the moderators to decide. I have been 'out' for last two months becuase of my traffic accident, I just recently started visiting the forums again, so I cant say I notice you before, but you've been quite active last few days.

The main thing is, do you concider your self an expert for a forum branch that you want to moderate, and does that forums have a moderator already.

I'm really active almost everyday except sunday..... It crossed my mind to apply as a moderator in Database Development because I frequent there and seemed to know the answers of the problems posted there but not all.....

It doesn't take time to get well known. There have been a few members who were very "well known" in just a few days (Anyone remember the Snake game? ), and others in just a few months.

Depends upon your involvement with the place.

Lol, mendhak...(Snake game)

Just become an active member of the forums thats the first step :)

As for what do you get out of it? Simple, you get to help people learn, and help create a community which is safe and appealing to everyone.

If you are a mod then you should post quality answers to threads here right? You should do this regardless of whether you are a member, a mod, a whatever.

In addition, just because you are a Mod doesn't mean you know everything, nor does it exempt you from making a mistake.

Contrary to, what may for some be, popular opinion, Mods are actually people too. :)

This is the reason I was not allowed to be a moderator. I am actually from a galaxy far far away, so...

I've just been here last feb this year, in your honest opinion have I not reached that stage as 'well-known'?I joined in January, and I've seen you around a lot in Classic VB, where I spend most of my time :) You seem to know your stuff and willing to help people :thumb: But don't forget we already have a fair few mods... Check out this page (http://www.vbforums.com/showgroups.php?) which shows all the admins, mods and the forums they moderate.
We currently have 13 moderators so it's not likely that we'll need a new one in the near future unless someone resigns as Jamie did recently. But I for one wouldn't object if you ever became a mod ;)

Just chipping in

I think penagate, dglienna and szlamany are more deserving to be a mod than me...... I'm still young and I think I would stick to VBForums for years... then perhaps get my chance.....
