    How is it possible (either with API or with DirectSound) to measure the volume of the sound going into a microphone at any time?

    Generally I'd look this up for you at http://www.allapi.com, but I have an annoyingly slow connection on this network and it would take forever Take a look though, there are tutorials on sound using the API, I expect you will want some functions whose names are prefixed with either 'wav' or 'mixer'.
