does anyone knows what has happen to a pc with xp home edition that is not able to update its window? I try the check for updates after selecting the popup box to download the files are shown however there is no sign of downloading from the services as shown on the tray (the connection tothe internet) At first i thought that the website is down temp. But this has happen for weeks. Then i disable my firewall and watever that blocks the download (which is very unlikely) but still in vain. Hope someone would give some suggestions thanks!

I infact had this problem the other day, Firefox had somehow messed with IE version 5. I couldnt update via Start > Settings > Windows Update, but when i installed IE 6 many problems were resolved. I could then do a windows update, so i doubt the microsoft site is down, what firewall are you using?
If you are using ZoneAlarm, is Windows Update configured for access to the internet?
Please tell us what version of IE you are using, and what other browser if any?
Cheers :duck:

Check to see if the service is running. I think it's called Windows Update.

erm..sorry to confuse you all guys... first i am using winxp home edition. i just reformat and reinstall my pc. (ie before that my computer using the same OS can be updated.) I am using IE version 6.++..(given in the OS) i install macfee anti virus and MS spyware. I have tried disabled both and still cannot update. No firewall is installed . (except given in the OS itself , ie under the internet connection properties) the windows update should be working as it enables to detects the updates that need to be install (i can see the list) . But when it comes to download...nothing happens.

Go to TrendMicro.com and run their online virus checker.
Can you download any other files?

you should also use a trojan scanner, incase your pc is infected with trojans. I reccomend you use The Cleaner (www.moosoft.com) - It s only a 30 day trial, but a very fast powerful scanner ;)

Do you have BITS (Background Intelligent Transfer Service) running? If not, Windows Update will not be able to download updates.

Hehehe, no it was a joke. I was trying to imply that rather than wait ages and ages for endless security updates to fill up and bloat your hard drive and operating system, switch to an already stable and secure OS :).
