hi, why have the people who own vbforums.com registered two domain names and pointed them both at the same server. vbforums.com if also vb-forum.com. why have they done this?

I'm not too sure of the history, as I think that all 3 (including vb-forums.com) have been active since I first joined several years ago.

A good reason to keep them going is in case people type the name wrong, or have bookmarks which point to one of the "outdated" names.

yeah but doesn't it cost Jupiter Media money to keep each domain running

The more the domains, the better it is. Some sites register hundreds of domain names that point to a single location. It does help, although I haven't seen it help much on the google indexes. I wish they would improve their search engine rankings.

According to my Google bar in Fx, we are now ranked as "PR:2".

For what keywords? I tried "visual basic" sans quotes.

These are just domain names that point to the same place. I don't know what Jupitermedia is paying, but I currently pay about $8 a year for a domain name. At that price, it is really no big deal having multiple domains pointing to the same place.

As to history.... vb-forums and vbforums were pointing to the same place before Jupitermedia obtained the forum. Some of the other domains that were obtained with VBForums now point to www.developer.com/net/vb (such as vbapi and vbsquare).

yeah but then they are paying three times as much as they would for just one domain name. why didnt they just have a page that said about changing bookmarks for a few weeks and then got rid of the domain name whilst changing over to another domain name. according to you they are paying about $8/Month per domain and that is $96/Year per domain but they own three domain names which is $288/Year for all three domain names which is quite a bit from just having just the one domain name. see what i am saying?

It's 8 per year Brad said, not per month :)

yes, $8 per year is what I -- or any guy on the street -- can pay to get a domain name. This is why if you see a good name, you buy it first and then think about it later. :)

The reason you don't dump domain names is because other people may have linked to the old domains. If you had linked to VBAPI and we dumped the domain, then your link is now bad. By keeping the domain, we don't break other people's links. Since those links are still going to our pages, it is usually worth the small token amount of money.

Of course, this is me speaking. I could ask why we -- Jupitermedia -- don't dump names. I know that sometimes we do; however, the reason I mention above is what I'd guess to hear.

sorry about my misstake about the us currency but things are a lot more expensive in the uk than in america. why did Jupitermedia change the domain name for vbforums.com in the first place? if jupitermedia did get rid of the old domains then they would save quite a bit of money. i dont know the exact amount of domains jupitermedia own but they proberly have something like 50 domains that dont get deleted just for bookmarks but if they did remove the domains then they would save something like 50 unused domains would save them about $400.
