I just read about windows longhorn and i must say microsoft and the direction they are taking scares me. They seem like they are slowly infringing on our privacy. Longhorn is going to essentially uniquely ID you and copying a cd? that will be a thing of the past as microsoft decides that it doesnt want users sharing media unless microsoft says its legitimate by there standards. Longhorn sounds more bloated, slower, and more confusing than windows xp. Every other day they have some new standard they make up that is more trouble than its worth. They say longhorn will have new protective measures to stop viruses and worms by only allowing authorized programs to run. Are they kidding me? how many people have authorized a program with a virus? um none. Sorry for the long message but anyone else feel this way? When they own 95 percent of markshare we live by there decision pretty much. Curious what any of u think on this.

I don't know where you got that information from, but they are not allowed to do that, the closest thing to something like that is product activation, and that doesn't uniquely identify you at all.

This digital signing of applications will prevent viruses attaching themselves to said executable and provide a much greater level of security than currently exists. This is a very good thing.

...and copying a cd? that will be a thing of the past as microsoft decides that it doesnt want users sharing media unless microsoft says its legitimate by there standards. To do this they would have to stop all 3rd party burner software (incl. Nero) and they cannot do this. Whether Microsoft like it or not CD burners are here to stay, especially as USB memory sticks haven't reached that capacity yet anyway.
Added to which many countries (incl the EU) allow persons to make ONE backup of a CD (software, music etc). So if Microsoft decided to stop CD burning they could be sued by a LOT of people for breach of European Law :thumb:

especially as USB memory sticks haven't reached that capacity yet anyway. I've seen ones offering 2GB of storage. While it doesn't get up to DVD standards, it certainly beats CDs.

That is just getting ridiculous. It's going to get to the point where HDD's are no longer needed, just take your USB HDD around with you :thumb:

Not a USB device per se, but CF type 2 tiny modules are actually tiny hard drives. My camera uses it, and I got a PCMCIA -> CF adapter for my laptop so it is the same as using a thumb drive. They are releasing a 6GB version for around $300 this month:

I think you can get a normal usb stick with a 2gb cap can't you? My dad finds tons of usb sticks at work. Stupid little kids drop them when they are running down the school hallways.

Doesn't take a stupid little kid. Those things are small enough that I keep misplacing mine. Guess I need more memory :D

Yep - and I understood every word in those two links :D
You say "have them here a long time" like they aren't all made in indo-china!
MS sent me a little 256 MB one for being a partner - with a little string for hanging around my neck...
But I end up putting it in my laptop case anyway!
[edit] Actually it's only 128 - I guess I didn't rate!

Nevermind. I'm not good at reading sometimes.
So this isn't an entirely useless post, a hard drive maker did make a 97GB hard drive entirely out of solid state memory. I believe it costs about $60k USD so it might be a while before solid state wins out the current HDs. Though I heard a company is currently developing a solid state type of memory that would be must cheaper and could hold much more data. I'll have to see if I can find that link.

1.5 How much data can you fit on a Blu-ray disc?
A single-layer disc can fit 23.3GB, 25GB or 27GB.
A dual-layer disc can fit 46.6GB, 50GB or 54GB.
To ensure that the Blu-ray Disc format is easily extendable (future-proof) it also includes support for multi-layer discs, which should allow the storage capacity to be increased to 100GB-200GB (25GB per layer) in the future simply by adding more layers to the discs.
told ya... :bigyello:
