do this for me
and tell me what u get
dim dbsMyDB As Database
Set dbsMyDB = DBEngine.Workspaces(0).OpenDatabase "C:\temp\YourdatabaseName.mdb")
Specify your own path...etc...
Am waiting...
What version of VB/Access r u using?

Access 97.
VB version is specified in my signature.
That works fine (already tried it), also I can connect using ADO using the DSN as well.
This is why I am stumped.
