Hello everybody,
I am thinking of getting linux, and fixing my broken computer, then turning it into a web server.

well, not really for hosting a website, but I need it to test my scripts and stuff.

<ahem>
I heard redhat 7.0 has came out, is this a stable release?

and does anybody have it, and know whether I should/shouldn't buy it?

I have heard that the best version of Linux is Mandrake. RedHat is common but I don't think it's the best available.

I have mandrake, but I always heard RedHat was better, I also assumed though, because almost every web hosting place that has linux servers, use RedHat(6.1)

Mandrake in my opinion is better than Redhat, Mandrake 7.1 rocks, and it's 100% compatible with Redhat packages. you may have heard Redhat is better, maybe due to the ammount of money they make, and the support they offer, as well as their expensive stocks, but striaght down i think mandrake is a better release (it used to be just like redhat with just extra software)

If you want to do development Debian is best but it has a sharp learning curve, or if you are in Europe u could use SUSE Linux free on the front cover of PC Plus every few months. Saying that so they give Mandrake away pretty often too - hmmmm are they trying to tell us something

1) from europe
2) I dont think he'll be using Linux for development, but more for as a home desktop OS to get away from windows.

what i want to be able to do is learn some *nix C programming, and run some PHP scripts off of it....
It won't be getting much traffic, 10 visitors at the most at one time...

I started with RedHat 5.2 at home with a spartan desktop.

I've dabbled with Mandrake 7.1 or maybe just 7.0 at work. It has sswwweeeeet desktops and a built in CD burner package.

I'm just waiting to get a new hard drive because I don't want to lose special apps I have compiled beautifully on RH5.2 that works so well. "Don't fix what isn't broken." I never got a CD burner to work with my RH5.2, so that's another plus for my eventual move or "multi-boot".

I have used redhat, mandrake, caldera, and suse. If you want the full linux exp. check out suse. You get kde and gnome along with about 1500 aps. Mandrake is easy to use but then again so is windows.
