    Is there a way to send bits through the parallel port?

    Sure, but you'll have you use a DLL. There are a choice of freeware DLLs at http://www.lvr.com/parport.htm .The one I use is http://www.lvr.com/files/inpout32.zip - it is the same as INP and OUT in QBasic.
