    Computer no internet

Friend of mine got herself a nasty virus. (computer virus)
She doesn't remember the name of it, however it involved hijacking IE.

Computer was scanned for viruses, adaware ran, and CWshredder ran.

Windows XP SP2 and all it's updates have been applied.

The problem is that the computer cannot access the internet.
I.E. pops up and never able to get to the page.
Zone alarm is installed, and we are never even prompted that IE wants to get out.
Firefox was installed after the de-virusing and even it does not get around to getting
    to the internet.
Some programs DO get to the internet. Just not our browsers.

We are re-installing IE 6 I think, this morning.
Any ideas? when that doesn't work?
    Merry Christmas

Check host files. BTW I have seen lots of my dumb friends gotten spyware and viruses like that. To be honest you will probaly use less time just reformating and installing a fresh copy then trying to solve the problem. Acidic tried the other day to fix somthing similar for one of his firend, and ended up formating the drive. Used a lot of time without getting anywhere.

yeah, the problem is, it was probably all knackered up by her boyfriend.
He apparently downloaded a lot of music, and who knows what else.
We have to keep the music and all the photos and whatnot that she
has of her kid. Guess we'll be searching around for a spare drive to copy to.

I was hoping to avoid the format thing. but I'm guessing that's gonna be the answer.
    Merry Christmas
