run scf off of the original XP cd that you boot to. get to a command prompt, and run SFC /? for options. Just repair the system files that it checks. If this doesn't work, do a re-install. You have deleted a necessary file.

add the checkmark, and the word [RESOLVED] to mark your thread as resolved.

Don't use the 98 boot disk, please stop recommending that. Do it during the Windows XP setup, if you use the boot disk, you don't get the ability to format as NTFS (or you format twice). It is a waste of time, and easier to use the Windows setup rather than FDISK.

I meant to say windows ME, and yes you do get the option....Because i have done it before

I believe it is format /FS NTFS C:

will XP work on a new disk that doesn't have any active partitions? I know that ME won't (at least the restore option of Ghost) that was bundled with eMachines. I did it last month.

Yes, if you use the format/partition utility in Windows XP setup, it will do this for you automatically.
