Alright, its time to really dwell into deep details about all the servers stuff... hope you guys can help me out with this... Breaking all the question marks and puzzle and clueless mindset of mine... ;-P

Guys,

Can anyone of you tell me how many types of server can be fit under one machine.. i heard a lot of sayings around the IT World.. saying that not all the servers can fit under 1 machine (normal pentium 2-3 Personal Computer)... How true is this?

For example :-
I want to have all the following in one machine :-

1. Email Server
2. Web Server
3. File Server
4. DNS Server
5. Print Server
6. Fax Server

Is it possible? i not so .. mind squeezing a bit explanation why is not practical ? or there might be clashes... i don't get it because web and email server will never have port clashes for sure.. File server and Print Server always comes together.. and doesn't have anything to do with the web and email server... DNS server is just merely mapping the DNS to a specific IP and and i know nothing much about the fax server though...

Professionl of all.. Please squeeze pieces of advise for me to really understand the situation .. thank you ... ;-P

There is nothing wrong with it, but it's not a good practice for a number of reasons. Suppose your computer generated a fault, instead of one network service going down, the whole lot goes down.

That said, depending on the load that the server will experience, I see no problem with it, as you increase the load however, be sure to increase the processor and RAM.

I wouldn't put email or web servers on the main server, but all of the other ones, with the possible exception of the fax server will run on one box.

For enchanced security, place internet based servers (Mail, web etc.) servers on a different computer to the servers for the internal network i.e. DNS, File etc.

First of all, Thanks for the precious advise which clears my mind once and for all... now i am really sure about it.. Anyway, based on the tips given by you guys... i had arrange them into such order...

1 Machine -> Web Server
1 Machine -> Email Server
1 Machine -> DNS + File + Print Server
1 Machine -> Fax Server

Will this be OK? i need comment.. and strategies.. and besides the above.. In real life.. how do all IT professionals or Administrator plan it? The most important part is.. i hope to hear from you guys.. how you guys plan it if you guys were given the authority.. ?

If i was in an organisation and was told to implement it how i wanted to, I'd place the Web Server, Mail Server and Fax server on its own computer and internal networking infrustructure on another server. However, if you use a decent firewall, you should be right with that if your budget is low and you can't get another server.

For example, my place of work, I setup the network like this:

1x ISA Server (Firewall, Proxy, Cache)
1x PDC w/ DNS, DHCP, User Accounts etc.
1x Backup Server
1x Applications Server/Web Server
