IP addresses in the 169.253.x.x range are APIPA (Automatic Private Internet Protocol Address) addresses. These addresses are automatically generated by a computer to use when a DHCP server cannot be found on the network. The best thing to do would be to give the computer a static IP address for now until you get your modem, then, if your modem has one, turn on the DHCP server on the modem and then reconfigure the IP configuration on the computer to automatic.

I would also recommend installing Windows XP anyway and if you do, make sure you install Service Pack 2.

did you re-boot with the cable attached? If an IP wasn't given, then the machine gives it the automatic one. It doens't renew automatically on older OS's. Try it.

To renew the IP on demand, at the command prompt type in ipconfig /renew and it will attempt to renew your IP address for you. This only works if your computer doesn't have an IP address or has an APIPA address.

windows ME hung for a very long time doing this, even after I release_all ip addresses. re-boot seemed to work best. we had a loose connection on th ME box.

You won't receive an IP address unless you have a DHCP server on your network. If you don't just assign each computer an IP address in the range 192.168.0.1 - 192.168.0.254 and a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0.

the cable modem DOES have dhcp, but it only renews on ME if you reboot. it just hangs forever. it does get an ip address and connects to the internet, but you still have to close the DOS window from task manager!
