Hi!
I`ve installed visual studio service pack 4 on my win98se pc, works fine (well, screws up old ado apps, and now i need to ship an extra 8 megs of rubbish, but lets call that `working`!)
But it doesnt want to install on my IBM NetVista running windows 2000 & service pack 1.
It complains about registering some ocx`s. It complains when i reboot too, with the error
An error occured calling `dllregisterserver` in c:\winnt\system32\comctl32.ocx" hresult = 8002801c.
it also complains about mci32.ocx,mschrt20.ocx,msflxgrd.ocx,richtx32.ocx.
VB now says that service pack 4 has been installed but i got told when i installed it that it HADNT installed, so i guess its half installed. Great.
Any ideas what i have to do to install it properly?
Thanks,
Alex

Win2000 has a scheme in place that protects certain system files, dll's, ocx's and exe's that reside in the system folder. I don't know how you get around that but your best bet is to scour MSDN...

Apparently, system files can only be changed by the system, or by Windows Update.

You're fast, Parskie but not fast enough :)

thanks for the reply.
Yeah, theres something like that, i have two accounts, or logins, or whatever (i`m very new to win2000!)
i can log in as me, or the administrator. i can only install lowlevel stuff as the administrator, and its as him that i installed the service pack. i had to log on as him to install outlook and visual studio, but not to install crystal reports or a bunch of other stuff.
So i`m doing all i can! it looks like its doing most of it ok, theres just a problem with a few ocxs.
i`ll check the knowledgebase at microsoft.com again though.
Thanks,
alex.

I run Windows 2000 SP1 with VS6 SP4, and I had no problems installing it.
It is important to note that you should be logged on with Administrator rights in order to install most software, including VS6 SP4....

i just reinstalled windows 2000 and i`m pissed off about having wasted about 3 hours doing so.
the problem, it appears, is not service pack 4, but crystal reports v8 (build 371). it screws with your registry. see ms knowledgebase article q268553. they have a link to seagates website (their id is c2007581). seagate have a patch, and microsoft tell you how to put the permission back to what it should be, but i couldnt undo the changes - i couldnt uninstall visual studio - or rather, when i re-installed it, i got complaints about the same .ocx`s and .dll`s. reinstalling windows2000 (using `upgrade` and not the full install) and service pack 1 (from the net) took ages.
I`ve reinstalled crystal reports 8 (only becuase i have to, believe me) but i am *not* going to install service pack 4 again. i`ll have to live without the bug fixes. maybe i should have installed service pack 4 before crystal reports the second time around, but seeing as it was sp4 which caused the problem, and its now 5pm friday afternoon, i dont really feel like being a beta tester for third party software -i`ve got my own to write!
(i was administrator when i installed everything.)
Thanks,
alex
