If you are wanting something that hits the topics hard and fast, then check out some of the certification books such as the Exam Cram 2 books.

I had to buy "C# how to program, intrudoction to .NET and Web Services".

First of all the cover is a bit gay-like. There are flies playing piano on the cover.

It took me a while to appreciate this book. Because it really deals about EVERYTHING and goes really slow through it , But on the other hand it really deals with everything. ;-) that's a good and a bad thing. It can be used as a reference or as a learning book.

    1) starting with 52 pages introduction about .NET and visual studio
    2) the next 25 pages are an introduction on C#
    3) followed by 73 pages (!) about programming structures and general syntax (for, if, do while, switch, string formatting, ||, &&, ^, ...)
    4) 54 pages about methods and recursive methods including some school-examples like fibonnacci and the towers of hanoi
    5) 34pages about arrays
    6) object based programming: 52 pages
    7) inheritance: 31 pages
    8) polymorphism: 49 pages
    9) exception handling : 24 pages
    10) GUI: 109 pages !! :-S
    11) multithreading : 24 pages
    12) 42 pages about strings , characters and regular expressions
    13) graphics and multimedia 69 pages
    14) files and streams ... 78 pages
    15) XML 46 pages
    16) SQL and ADO.NET i believe this was what you are looking for ? (44 pages)
    17) ASP.NET 134 pages
    18)33 pages about sockets
    19) 53 pages about collections and structures
    20) all about accessibility ... 49 pages
    21) there's a cd included with examples about all of this and other fancy examples: the next 253 pages deal mainly about that
