If you're talking about that matching curves thing, that's not really a fair comment. You're effectively asking us to consider a melon and a grapefruit (both similar but abstract), and to define a procedure for measuring their similarity: it's all just as well, in my head I can say "yeah they're both pretty round, taste great etc" but it's a damn sight harder to be able to say "yeah they're 86.57% similar because ".

Think before you complain, pleb.

It amazes me that you can even spell mathematicians, let alone grasp the rudiments of cartesian geometry given the state of your posting. Ok, so English might not be your first language (or your second even) but "u r !" is clearly inadequate syntactical parsing on your part. The fact that you seem to have access to a computer, is one that I find rather disturbing.

We all clearly aspire to a intellectual plane such as the one you seem to be occupying. And I apologise for personally not being interested in whether or not you find a solution to your rather strange problem. I hope you find an answer to your mathematics question though.

I also apologise if that seemed a bit harsh.

I'm going to leave it on though, because it's probably the most eloquent thing I have ever written on this board!

You simply didn't give us enough information to go on. I asked for more in the last post of your previous thread, though you never responded. I assumed you recieved another answer or used the one Acidic responded with and let it drop.

Step #1) The graph whose X endpoint is < than the x endpoint of the other graph, multiply all its x's by x2/x1, where x2 is the max x of the other graph, and x1 is the max x of this graph. {Something like that}

Step #2) Ditto Y

Step #3) Define similarity

Step #4) Judge the two in comparison to each other with the relation you defined in step #3.

Step #5) Is there EVER a Step 5????

well................interesting replies....... i was just kidding and i opologize if i offended anyone in any way....i never intended that!
But this problem is driving me crazy......i think there should be a way to measure the distance between them (like dynamic programming, or edit distance algorithm)
There's a paper named "On Aligning Curves" for someone named "Sebastian" seems to answer the problem but i couldn't understand it....here's a link if anyone interested

www.lems.brown.edu/vision/publications/Kimia's_Publication/ Journals/aligning_curves-PAMI.pdf

anywayz...thanks a lot guys,
have a nice day

If you really want to be complex about it:

Say, with two graphs y = f(x) and y= g(x)

1) let h(x) = f(x) - g(x). This gives you the vertical differences
2) let j(x) = d( h(x)) / dx (i.e. the differential of j(x))

if j(x) = 0 always, then f(x) = g(x)+a and the graphs are similar
if j(x) = constant, then the graphs are also similar

u get what i mean...j(x) just graphs the differences between the functions.

This doesn't cope well with skews though (i.e. f(x) = g(x+a))
however i'm sure there's a way to get around that

Hi Wossname,

The danger in a vitriolic attack like the forgoing is that it may include more errors than were in the object of the attack!

"cartesian geometry given the" should have a "," after "geometry".

" syntactical parsing". Neither word is appropriate. You are trying to use "syntactical" as an adverb, or "parsing" as a noun. Also, "parsing" is totally inappropriate - "abbreviations" is the word required.

"(or your second even)" should be "(or even your second)" -Some people would prefer "," either side of "even".

" to a intellectual plane" should be " to an intellectual plane"

"be occupying. And I " NEVER begin a sentence with "And".

"I hope you find an answer to your mathematics question though." should omit "though".

Having thus said, I expect I have made some equivalent grammatical errors.

Noting that this is a Maths Forum, I would have thought that "U R " was perfectly acceptable.

taxes...you raise interesting points, one being:

"NEVER begin a sentence with 'And'"

I'm not sure which movie (I belive 'Finding Forrester', or something like that), but it is pointed out that because this 'rule' has been taught for so long, that it is now a literary feature to put conjunctions at the beginning of sentences to enhance your point.

The unexpected addition creates surprise and gets the reader listening (or, in this case, reading) what is being said!

Hi sql_lall,

Oh boy!! If you are going to base your education on Hollywood (or Bollywwod etc) you are going to get a queer angle on a hellava lot of subjects! e.g. Braveheart; Enigma etc.

Seriously, what you are referring to falls into the realms of poetic license but that does not mean it is correct. However, we are all entitled to the freedom to express ourselves in any manner we choose but it is up to us to make sure we are understood. I happen to believe that the basic English language is a superb communications tool and, like all sophisticated tools of any type, requires correct application to be most effective.

I spend most of my internet time on the VB.NET forum where it is all too obvious that misuse of language results in the wrong questions being answered.

Anyway, us Poms are entitled to be superior to you Diggers in this, seeing as we can't match you in more important matters e.g. tennis or cricket (We did not do so bad at rugby union though --did we?  )

By the way, that was not an intention to bag anyone or any minority groups (such as the English), even if we do beat them in cricket, tennis, <continue inserting sports :p>

as for the rugby union comment, thank god for johnny wilkinson (sp?), england's one man team!

Hi,

"as for the rugby union comment, thank god for johnny wilkinson (sp?), england's one man team!"

And I thought all of OZ's thanks would be for the 16th member of their team, the Referee and his blind eye:D :D

Anyway, we probably needed only one man!!

By the way, do you recall one of our other one man teams - Ian Botham?

HI,

"the English), even if we do beat them in cricket, tennis, <continue inserting sports >"

Hang on a minute!! Where are the OZ's in Badminton, Table Tennis, Hockey, Squash, Grand Prix Motor Racing, Rowing, Cycling, Darts, Snooker (oh I think there was one in the last 20 years  ) Ski Sports, Ice Dancing, Chess, Bridge, Chequers, Crib, Whist, Origami and Flower Arranging????????? Come to think of it you only have Cricket and Tennis to crow about:D :D (A long time ago you also had swimming)

Hell! What am I gaffing about? You guys are in the top 5 acceptable nationalities ( out of about 2500):) :)

Seriously, if there is not an English presence in a sporting event, most of us root for the Aussies or the Yanks. It's great to see our offspring doing so well:wave:

Those of us who remember the last World War know how much we owe you both.

actually we own you at hockey too :p

rowing i'm sure we could tide you over

i'll let you guys keep the origami and flower arranging :p

as for chess, surely that belongs to the russians :p

lets not start that whole aussies are our descendants argument (not even sure if it's been started here) :p

and what are you talking about with the swimming!@?

Ian Thorpe was kind enough to pull out of some events to give other countries a chance :D!

But you guys have Pieter Van Den Hoogenband, which i must admit is a very cool name

Oh wait, he's dutch, bl :p

U did kinda stuff up that list:
Badminton: Yeah, not very good over here...
Table Tennis: Also not too good, but neither are UK.
Hockey: Bad choice
Squash: Kinda have had many recent #1 players, both sexes
Grand Prix Motor Racing: Mark Webber, Row 1 of grid.
Rowing: Pretty close to UK
Cycling: Ha! Also bad choice
Darts: Had seven-time world champ, unfortunately lost last year
Snooker: yeah, UK kinda beat us too
Ski Sports: Alisa Camplin...(+ check paralympics)
Ice Dancing: Hehe...Oz no chance
Chess: Same as above, but getting better

Bridge, Chequers, Crib, Whist, Origami and Flower Arranging
...don't know about these...

We waste all our time on AFL, which is a terrible sport if u ask me...soccer is much better (oh, i had to mention soccer, sorry bout last match) ;)

Sorry if i seem like I am trying to look superior, i'm not usually like this, just Oz ppl have to jest with UK, it's natural

Actually with chess, not so long ago we were second in the World rankings BUT

the USSR disintegrated into several fully fledged countries and we suddenly became 12th!!!!!
