If you're talking about that matching curves thing, that's not really a fair comment. You're effectively asking us to consider a melon and a grapefruit (both similar but abstract), and to define a procedure for measuring their similarity: it's all just as well, in my head I can say "yeah they're both pretty round, taste great etc" but it's a damn sight harder to be able to say "yeah they're 86.57% similar because ".

It amazes me that you can even spell mathematicians, let alone grasp the rudiments of cartesian geometry given the state of your posting. The fact that you seem to have access to a computer, is one that I find rather disturbing.

Step #1) The graph whose X endpoint is < than the x endpoint of the other graph, multiply all its x's by x2/x1, where x2 is the max x of the other graph, and x1 is the max x of this graph. {Something like that}

Step #2) Ditto Y

Step #3) Define similarity

Step #4) Judge the two in comparison to each other with the relation you defined in step #3.

Step #5) Is there EVER a Step 5????

well................interesting replies....... i was just kidding and i opologize if i offended anyone in any way....i never intended that!
But this problem is driving me crazy......i think there should be a way to measure the distance between them (like dynamic programming, or edit distance algorithm)
There's a paper named "On Aligning Curves" for someone named "Sebastian" seems to answer the problem but i couldn't understand it....here's a link if anyone interested

If you really want to be complex about it:

Say, with two graphs y = f(x) and y= g(x)

1) let h(x) = f(x) - g(x). This gives you the vertical differences
2) let j(x) = d( h(x)) / dx (i.e. the differential of j(x))

if j(x) = 0 always, then f(x) = g(x)+a and the graphs are similar
if j(x) = constant, then the graphs are also similar

u get what i mean...j(x) just graphs the differences between the functions.

This doesn't cope well with skews though (i.e. f(x) = g(x+a))
however i'm sure there's a way to get around that

" syntactical parsing". Neither word is appropriate. You are trying to use "syntactical" as an adverb, or "parsing" as a noun. Also, "parsing" is totally inappropriate - "abbreviations" is the word required.

"(or your second even)" should be "(or even your second)" -Some people would prefer "," either side of "even".

Having thus said, I expect I have made some equivalent grammatical errors.

I'm not sure which movie (I belive 'Finding Forrester', or something like that), but it is pointed out that because this 'rule' has been taught for so long, that it is now a literary feature to put conjunctions at the beginning of sentences to enhance your point.

The unexpected addition creates surprise and gets the reader listening (or, in this case, reading) what is being said!

Seriously, what you are referring to falls into the realms of poetic license but that does not mean it is correct. However, we are all entitled to the freedom to express ourselves in any manner we choose but it is up to us to make sure we are understood. I happen to believe that the basic English language is a superb communications tool and, like all sophisticated tools of any type, requires correct application to be most effective.

I spend most of my internet time on the VB.NET forum where it is all too obvious that misuse of language results in the wrong questions being answered.

Anyway, us Poms are entitled to be superior to you Diggers in this, seeing as we can't match you in more important matters e.g. tennis or cricket (We did not do so bad at rugby union though --did we? :wave: :wave: )

Rowing: Pretty close to UK
Cycling: Ha! Also bad choice
Darts: Had seven-time world champ, unfortunately lost last year
Snooker: yeah, UK kinda beat us too

Actually with chess, not so long ago we were second in the World rankings BUT
