Install a firewall, which you should have anyway... or just goto:

    1. Start
    2. Run
    3. CMD (2000/NT/XP) or command (95/98/Me)

    Then type

    net stop messenger

Which will disable it. I'de still recommend installing a firewall though... you're are at risk if you don't. There are a few people who will not slag this comment off, and give their opinion on firewalls, just ignore them.

If you have Windows XP, turn the firewall on that comes with that. It may seem dumb but it blocks lots of harmful things including that i think. Stay tuned for the new firewall in Windows XP SP2 though, it is very good, a lot more user friendly and more configurable too, bit like ZoneAlarm.
I use Microsoft Visual Basic 2005. (Therefore, most code samples I provide will be based around the .NET Framework v2.0, unless otherwise specified)

For the average consumer, it's not available, and it is more than sufficient for everybody to use.

It's made by Microsoft... do you really believe it's sufficient?

Nah... it's not that bad really, just not suitable if you want the machine really secure.

Just to be clear though.... service pack 2 is still in beta stage, and I wouldn't advise you install it on your primary machine.

PC performance buffs have long measured hardware advances using a few simple metrics: Is it faster? Is it bigger? Does it have more blinky lights?
