Can you please put a limit to the number of lines that can be put in a signature? Its a pain in the arse when looking through long threads having to see the same huge paragraph of crap repeated over and over again down the page.

One member has a signature that is about 21 lines long! PLEASE put a limit on it, its driving me nuts. Most of the stuff people put in it is short and siccinct. It should not be a place to store your life story, or dozens of tedious aphorisms.

10 lines is enough I think and a maximum of 1 image [img] tag. Something like that would be OK.

I'm not trying to annoy people with this, its just a waste of memory and download time to have to see the same sig repeated 20 times on a page, and it wasn't even interesting the first time.

Please do something about it.

Something else also occurs to me. Why not disable signatures on posts that have a message of less than, say, 200 characters in length? That would save a great deal of time and would ease server traffic in busy times.

If someone has a signature that seems overly long or not appropriate, let a moderator know. We don't like long sigs either.

I believe so. :) As they say, no point putting in the limit if it gets removed again a month or two later.


But honestly, its like 3-4 lines of code, an If then to check the length of the sig, or else display an error message.... :p

Well, I'd remove everything exept for my add of phantasy gamers, but I can't coz Brad told me it's not permited in the Forums... So links in the sig shouldn't be tolerated, and you have "useful ones" making yourself special permissions? :eek: :D, anyways, I'm not complaning... just arguying... Maybe we should remove the link possibility and image to sigs... ?

Brad wouldn't have said your not allowed a link to a site in your link :confused: thats what most peoples sig's are mainly made up of. I wasn't aware of any rule saying we can only link back to this site in our sig. I agree though some people go over the top with full size banners in thier sig which really gets in the way.

Hi, Is it because of my signature size or because we are not suppost to have advertisement link on our signatures?

Because I noticed a mass of other users do use links in sigs, and with pictures also, example, user: "mendhak"...

I'm not insisting, I will reduce the size of my signature if this is what you meant, but for the link, can I keep it?

Are you asking me or are you telling me?

If it is a book you wrote, then you should list the title in your signature. You should not, however, list an ad in your signature. I will, however, overlook anyone that puts something like "Check out the book I wrote, "Xxxx"" provided they actually wrote the book they are referencing. This isn't to say that someone else from Jupitermedia wont' come back and say to remove it if it is an ad.

I'm sure your already aware that lots of people have links to other forums in thier links, granted mostley not VB forums but still they are forums that may be seen as competiors. I'm not suggesting you ban this but I suppose I can see a problem when the adverts become graphics.

Ok, so to make this more clear, I can add my Link to phantasy gamers back but can't add the banner (which happens to be an image similar to anyone...)?

Banners are blatantly obvious and compete with the paid ads on this site. As such, they get noticed near immediate and will get you into trouble for advertising.

As to text in signatures, it is more how you word the text than what text you word. If you are a phantasy gamer, and simply list "phantasy gaming" under your name, then it is descriptive of you and will most likely be overlooked by the admins, mods, and owners. If you say "Go to...", "Check out...", or words that sound 'marketing', then it is more likely to be flagged as an ad, in which case I or one of the moderators are going to have to whack you with a PM asking you to remove it. Text such as "A website of gaming developpement, discussions and more" when associated with a non-Jupitemedia web site would also catch the attention and may result in a request to remove the text -- as much for the typos as anything ;).

If it is a competitive site, then there is a good chance you could be asked to remove it as well. Just as McDonalds doesn't let Burger King post stickers wiht Burger King's logo on their doors and counters, it doesn't make sense for a forum to allow the same. Having said that, I go back to the previous paragraph in saying that the text you use or the amount you use will determine whether we even notice it.

In summary, graphics are more likely to get you in trouble in your sigs. text depends on your wording. Signatures are suppose to be information about you to help tell others about you.

Just to clarify - We are talking about signatures in this thread. You can use the words "check out" and even the dots (...) in your sig. It is what follows them that could be unallowable. ;)
