Eight years ago my father was three times as old as I shall be in five years time. When I was born he was 41 years old.

How old am now?

F - 8 = (M + 5) * 3
M = F - 41

Solving (on calc) yeilds M=9 & F=50

Check:
50 - 8 = (9 + 5) * 3
42 = 14 * 3
42 = 42

9 = 50 - 41
9 = 9
