Selecting text in Win XP

When using MS Word under Win 98, I could select ANY square piece of text by keeping down the Alt key and using the mouse. But this feature is not available with Win XP (Office XP?) How can I do this in Office XP?

I don't understand what you are trying to do...

Example: When I click on a line in Word, 3 cm from the left margin, then hold Alt down and selecting text, the selected area STAYS 3 cm from the left margin, even if I move down a couple of lines. I can't do this in Win XP.
