changing host, how do i transfer domain name?

    hi

my current webhost for my website is, to be quite frank, terible.

so... i want to change to a different webhost. however, the domain name of my site is registered right, so i cant register it again as it already exists, right?

Where did you register your domain name at?

To transfer it you just change the nameserver entires to point to your new host.

Although, this is not what the mean by 'transfering'. Lets say you registered your domain with some web host, they hold ownership of the domain for you. Transfering the domain to you would also transfer the ownership.

If the ISP owns the domain.... then you didn't read the agreement thorough enough.... or got snookered.... respectable ISP will do the domain registration for you, but you should still retain ownership (especially if you've paid for it.)

To transfer the domain to the new namespace, the aquiring ISP/host should be able to take care of that on your behalf, or at least provide a way to do it. Check the control panel of your ISP, or their FAQ/Help documents. Or shoot them an email. Creating the change record for the routers to pick up is fairly easy and quick. But it will take time for the change to propigate it over the internet.

    ISPs now sell domains?

Anyway, the new host will give you nameserver addresses (it should be more than one, otherwise the host may not be reliable) and you just change those with your domain. You said it was registered 'right' so I take it you registered it and not your old host? If your old host registered it, then you're going to have to have them transfer ownership of the domain over to you.

I'd recommend using www.godaddy.com for all domain purchases instead of allowing a hosting company do it for you. Just don't depend on their support.

Also, when you get your domain fixed and changed, make sure to lock it.
