Converting MEDIA

Hi,
I have a JVC digital Camcorder, it has USB and firewire connection. It uses mini DV tapes as the media. I would like to conver them to digital format such as MPEG, AVI etc.

Whats the easiest and chipest way of doing it?

You could use Windows Movie Maker 2, but it only encodes to WMV. USB would work fine too, works fine with Movie Maker 2.

Huh, i overlooked that, oops, i knew what he ment when i glanced at the word. It was just implied that he ment cheapest reading the body of the post. Chipset is just way ot there.

NoteMe, no I don’t have a firewire port in my pc. I think I will stick to USB.

I have checked the CD that came with the Camcorder but there don’t seem to be any software which can record video on PC while the tape is playing on the camcorder.

I am looking for a software which will let me play my videos on my pc and just record whatever parts I wish. Some one recommended Adobe Premier, but not sure if its capable of that.

Has any one used it? Or any other suggestion is welcome.

Didja try WIndows Movie Maker, i know it doesn't do AVI files, but it still does good WMV files.

Premiere is quite powerful and will cost you a pretty penny. Cyberlink and Sonic Foundry make some good video editors too.

Premiere is a great program for editing videos but if you just want to convert the files, goto microsoft's website and download the windows media player 9 encoder. It makes it really easy to change the file. Or you could use virtualdub I'm pretty sure, but virtualdub isnt as easy as wmp encoder.

Yes i would lilke to be able to edit the video. I want to encode the out put to mpge or avi. Can i do that with Media Player which i think outputs in wmv doesnt it?

My main concern is how to transfer the media from the Camcorder to my pc.

Ok, first you need a firewire port on your computer (also called i-link or ieee1394).

If you dont have one built in, you can get a pci card that will do this at any computer store or online.

You also need a firewire cable that goes from however many pins your firewire card has (four or six) to however many pins your camera has (four or six).

Install the firewire card, and when that is setup, simply plug in the firewire camera (sometimes it has to be in play back mode). If you have xp, it will play the device connected sound (like when you plug in a usb device).

On mine, it starts windows movie maker automatically, but I have version 2 (do a quick google search for "windows movie maker 2" and download it).

If it doesn't start any programs, run movie maker, and click on capture. Select your camera and follow the prompts.

Usb does not work as well as firewire (most cameras only support usb 1.1, and the limited bandwidth gives a really crappy picture). You spent a bunch of money on the camera, spend a little more to get good quality video captures.

I have a Samsung SCD27. I like it a lot. It has analog (rca jack) inputs (edit: svideo too), and a screen about an inch bigger than most other cameras. Battery life is also very good.
