Which one do I buy?

Portable USB Hard Drive - 40 GB

EXTERNAL CD Writer (USB)

What I mean to ask is, which one would be more advantageous to purchase? A CD Writer or an external hard drive? For starters, an external hard drive has the large storage capacity, and on the other hand, an external CD writer allows me to keep writing to CDs, in effect, unlimited storage, at a small cost per CD.

Which one is better?

For me , I would buy Portable USB Hard Drive for some reasons :
1-On the fly setup .
2-Stop buying empty Cds .
3-Unlimited file size storage . (not like in the Cd-R 700mb or even 750 mb) .
4-Small .
5-Portable .
6-Compatible with all 2000 OSs (for Win98 or 95 there must be a driver) .
7-Change stored data (delete , re-create - re-arrange-edit , add..etc) .
8-If my calcuations right , then a 40 Gb Portable USB HD would repalce 58 Cds with size of 700Mb each . This is alone .

u can write songs etc and give it to ur freinds......

Do you use CDs?

Do you have a cd player in your car?

Do you have a stereo?

Do you know how to virtually mount a CD?

You could store cd images on the USB drive, and then emulate them, using software on the USB drive.

The big question is, do you plan to use the drive for non-computer related material. Basically, music CDs.

If not, why get a burner? CD's are cheap, but cheap CDs will get damaged a lot easier. I bought these ones from Walmart and the metal came right off the top(very cheap CDs). Happened to be a back-up CD too....

USB Drive definitely.

More reliable generally, faster access. Its an extension to your system rather than a utility like the cd burner.

Although I'd probably save up and get a 120GB or higher (maybe firewire?)

Your going to notice that slow read/write speeds to the drive of course. ;) (unless you go with firewire, but even then?)

I think you're an idiot.... Unlimited file size storage?? Wrong. 40 gigs.

CDs are unlimited.

Firewire CD burner would be the best i think. It's SUPER fast, you can use direct CD, just like a floppy. And the 40 gigs = 58 cds; that's ALL, unless u delete stuff and replace it, but that's not very good backup, now is it? My father has one.. it's marvelous.

Jeese I have 30Gig of info I want to transport wow Ill just take my hard drive. Man If I would have bought that external CD-RW than It would take about 40 Cd's to back this up.
