My CD burner doesn't work anymore, here's the situation:
I formatted my computer (yes dear readers, dont laf woka ;)-remember previous disscusions :p - nyways, because I had win98 and wanted to move to XP and my sis installed lots o crap bout 2 gigs of unkown crap, getin back at what i wuz sayin: ), and my CD Burner doesn't work anymore... In details:
1. Formated My com (to NTFS fil system, winXP)
2. Installed Roxio Easy CD Creator 5
3. Burned a CD With Easy CD Creator: FAILED
4. Installed Nero Ultra 6 Burning software
5. Burned a CD Nero 6: FAILED (See the attachment for details)
6. Burned a CD with built-in XP burner : FAILED
now... I did research, and found out winXP is using the same software of Roxio (Easy CD Creator's software) So I taught Maybe If I reinstalled to repair mode windows, maybe the drivers and softwares would get back to normal and stuff... so:
7. Uninstalled Roxio Easy CD Creator
8. Reinstalled Windows XP in repair mode
9. Tryed burning a CD again with NERO, still ain't working...
... Running out of ideas here... I need to burn my Final Session CD Project but I CANT and I cant afford loosing the data to burn on my com so formatting is out of the question! ANY ideas????
I attached the NERO logs burning failure,
Here are a few notes that may help:
While burning, It takes around 30 seconds, then says the burning failed...
Also here is the Burner I use: HL-DT-ST CD-RW GCE 8481B
its a 48x24x48... or it used to be... :( :( :( Hope to get ideas soon

Ummm...You forgot to upload the nero log...
Well what do i have to say about my CD burner?
My computer thinks that its a hard drive!
Back to topic : Well I dont know what you can do...Maybe you can search on google or in another search engine for a CD Burner checker...Nero must have some CD checks too...Did you tried them?

Roxio Easy CD Creator 5 sucks balls with Windows XP. You have to run a bunch of patchs and cross your fingers to get it to work. The good news with that is once you get it it shouldn't give you any more trouble. Also Nero doesn't always work well if it is installed side by side with EZCD. Also what does didn't work mean? Did it recognize it as a burner? Did it give a buffer underrun? What?

a bunch of patches... where???? and I meant that nero failed after 30 seconds of burning (like all other burning softwares), he caches the files, tryes to burn, and obiously recognize the burner, because it screws my CDS... I must of lost around 10 cds allready... I'd like to fix it before my budget blows

By the way, the CD burner can read CDS normally and the light is green when its reading... So I don't think its a hardware problem...

Are you using TakeTwo or whatever its called, the backup thing in EZCD? If so then thats the trouble because it doesn't work in XP. The patchs are on the roxio website although if it installed and hasn't complained yet then that isn't the trouble.
Writer.cpp isn't be any chance in use or locked up somewhere is it? I'd imagine you don't have the project open in VS or anything.

I mean are you just using the normal data cd thing or the TakeTwo deal that comes with EZCD? They are sort of two different apps. Take Two is some kind of backup software. I don't mean is it running I mean are you using it for the burn. Although if it failed in Nero too then thats probably not it. Non of your code files are corrupt by chance? The cpp files you are burning I mean.
I'm headed home now. I'll try to help later if I can but I don't know how much help I'll be. Seems like some kinf of freak problem.

Well no im not sure... I have the windows XP drivers for the CDburner, and as I said before It can read cds perfectly, but can't burn them...
Some people said in this forum:
http://www.siliconguide.com/qa/forum/messages/135.shtml
that Windows XP doesn't have compatible drivers for my burner... does anybody have an idea where I can get the drivers??? I can't find them anywhere nor people in the other chat!
My burner: HL-DT-ST CD-RW GCE 8481B

what if it isn't a ribbon?

Not thinking it is the ribbon...Its having them both on the same ribbon that can produce coasters.

I always have mine on the same ribbon and never get coasters. If you stick it on the same ribbon as teh hard drive it will limit your hard drive to the lower speed.

I have never had any problems with my set up...when my customers come in with this same problem they usually have both the CDROM and the burner on the same ribbon...when I switch it to CDROM/HD0 & burner/solo, I get no complaints OR coasters. I have never seen a hard drive run "at the slower speed" not quite sure what you mean by that.

If multiple devices are on the same ribbon then they both run at the slower of the two's ata speed. For instance a cdrom can only run at ata33 or 66 I forget but a harddrive can run at ata100 or ata133. So if you have a hard drive capable of running at ata100 and couple it with a cdom then it will only run at ata66 (or whatever cdroms run at). Which effectively limits the access speed of the hard drive.
I'm not sure what happens if you run one PIO but its been my experience that PIO sucks up clock cycles and runs noticable much slower or has lots of hang time.

Interesting stuff Edneeis, thanks for the insight...I have never even noticed a degradation of speed. (I must be gettin' old)
Now I hope this can help Ruku with his situation ;)

Yes it is on the same ribbon, I adjusted the ribbon and it still doesn't work (and I told before it could read CDS and the green light is on... if it wouldn't be, then it would be wrongly connected I guess)... besides, why would a format affect anything physical on my computer?!
anyways, now I do simulations not to waste more than those 10 or more cds I just threw in the garbage!!!
I think what'll do is partition my drive with 1 gig of fat32 and put win98 for burning... and run bootmagic to select it if needed... I have no idea what else to do...
and by the way, whats a coaster... ? (yeah im french...!) The only coaster I know is a roller coaster... :p lol

Uh... wait... actually I think I set it to slave...!  ... Then again, wait, why would it make a difference? Why did it worked before in win98 and now doesnt work in winXP?
Btw, My Master Is my Cdrom drive (50x) and my slave is my burner... You want me to put em both on Master???
Wait, maybe if I switch my burner to Master and my CDrom to slave... ? Then again, why can it READ cdroms and not burn em... God im so confused right now :'(

try finding new aspi drivers... when i installed winXP, i couldn't rip CDs using my burner until i got those new drivers. And i think i couldn't burn too
or your atapi drivers... give that a try before reformatting again..
google should come up with some decent results. :)

What is the exact name and model?

A coaster is a usless cd that you put under your drink so that it doesnt make rings on the table or whatever (CD's make really good coasters)
try disconnecting the other CD-ROM drive and just leave the burner and HD, see if that works.
