You really should read all 6 of Frank Herbert's Dune books... They will give you a great insight into a possiblity for the human race
I take it by "we" you mean mankind and not as in any particular person living for ever...
Personally I think "we" have a chance... providing we can stop killing each other, start being responsible for the things we create (nuclear bombs, genetic engineeing etc), and start thinking of ourselves as a "planet" rather than as individual countries, I think we might be able to see ourselves into the rest of existance.
The problem at the moment is that humanity resides on a single ball of mud that orbits around an insignificant ball of fire. Until we can actually explore the stars we are vulnerable to a single meteor or a natural disaster that ends it all.
As for the "point to living" I think that is completely irrelevant to the human race. Think of it like this...
You will only be here for at most 100 years of a universe that has already existed possibly longer than 100,000,000,000,000,000 years... That makes your entire life a spec of dust in comparison to the "scheme of things"
So what you have left is personal... Those 100 years are the only 100 years you are going to have, so the meaning of life, the reason for living comes down to whatever you want to put into it.
You have a dirt box in front of you that has fresh dirt in it, now you can feel sorry for the fact that dirt box won't be there in 100 years or you can plant things in it and enjoy them while it IS here... what won't change is the fact you enjoyed them while they are there.
This is where I think religion goes astray... they spend so much of their time telling you what "NOT" to do and restrict everything that by the end of your life you have never tried anything and have wasted the time you have. Of course it is their belief it isn't a waste because you go to something bigger and better but I keep wondering why they don't just speed the process up and get there a little quicker
I have only 2 rules in my life...
1. Don't purposely force someone to do something they don't want to do
2. Don't purposely hurt someone who doesn't want to be hurt
Taking those 2 things in mind I am free to do anything and everything this world has to offer, to experience it and everything in it while still remaining respectful of the people around me and maintaining morals and values that protect the right for everyone to live in the way they chose to live.
So many people say "I can't do that, its wrong" when they have never tried it to know... only because someone told them it was wrong.
Ah but this is just the ramblings of but one person and not someone everyone else can agree with
