Path variable in XP Prof machine

How will I set the path in an XP prof machine? I tried this but won't work:

Path C:\Mypath;%Path%

Want to edit it from the file (might be read only) where it is saved but dont know what file to look for. Please help...

Right click my computer
advanced
click environment variables

Fine path and just add onto it
